Description of Procedure
Electrical current is used to induce a brief seizure while the client is anesthetized.
Indications CONSIDERATIONS
Major Depressive Episode
- Sysptoms unresponsive to medication. Nursing Interventions (pre, intra, post)
- Other treatment higher risk than ECT Pre: Eval:
- Suicidal/Homicidal and need for rapid therapeutic response - Atropine or glycopyrrolate 30 minute before to reduce secretions
- Verify Consents signed
- Psychotic manifestations - Blood work, ECG, Chest X-ray
Schizophrenia - Discontinue Benzodiazepines prior
- Monitor vitals
- Catatonic manifestations - Monitor pre existing heart conditions
- Schizoaffective disorder Intra: Eval:
- Monitor client
Acute Mania - Administer 100% O2
- Rapid cycling Post: Eval:
- Unresponsive to lithium or antipsychotics - Monitor vitals
- Monitor pre existing heart conditions
- Monitor blood pressure
Outcomes/Evaluation
Client Education
- Monitor vitals
- Assess memory - 2-3 times weekly for first 6 to 12 treatments
- Assess pain - not permanant fix and requires
- Monitor symptoms of depression maintenance treatments
- Monitor symptoms of schitzophrenia - May cause memory loss
Potential Complications Nursing Interventions
- Memory loss - Insert IV and administer fluids
- Head aches - Administer medications
- Anethesia reactions - Manage head ache pain
- Cardiovascular changes including rythem - Provide continuous monitoring of vitals
- Monitor cardiac rythm
- Reorient client as neccesary
- Assist with hygeine needs
