Muscular System Questions with Answers Skeletal muscles - ANSWER- A muscle that is attached to the bones of the skeleton and provides the force that moves the bones. Muscle belly - ANSWER- Fleshy central portion of a muscle (usually between the tendons) Tendon - ANSWER- Attaches muscles to bone (usually at each end of a skeletal muscle) Biceps brachii - ANSWER- flexes (bends) the elbow and supinates the forearm Triceps brachii - ANSWER- extends forearm at elbow joint and extends arm at shoulder joint Trapezius - ANSWER- helps you tilt your head backwards and shrug your shoulders and stabilizes the scapula. Deltoid - ANSWER- lifts the arms over your head Latissimus dorsi - ANSWER- Pulls the upper end of the humerus and shoulder downward and backward (as if doing a pull up) Gastrocnemius - ANSWER- large muscle that makes up the calf on the back of your lower leg. Plantar-flexes the foot; allowing you to stand on your toes Pectoralis major - ANSWER- large, broad muscle in the chest that flexes and adducts the humerus across the chest, and rotates the humerus (a major muscle used in push ups or bench press). Biceps femoris - ANSWER- Flexes (bends) leg at the knee and extends thigh at the hip; belongs to the hamstring group Rectus femoris - ANSWER- Extends (straightens) leg at the knee and flexes thigh (pulls thigh forward) at hip. It is part of the Quadriceps ("quad") muscle group. Sartorius - ANSWER- Flexes, abducts, and laterally rotates thigh at the hip; flexes knee. Longest muscle in the body. Gluteus maximus - ANSWER- Extends and externally rotates the femur at the hip (allowing you to stand from a seated/squat position). Largest muscle of the buttock. Rotator cuff - ANSWER- Group of 4 muscles and their tendons that hold the head of the humerus securely in place as it rotates within the shoulder joint Rectus abdominis - ANSWER- Central section of the "abs" that flexes and rotates the trunk (core) of the body Abdominal obliques - ANSWER- Lateral (side) abdominal muscles that assist in flexion and rotation of the trunk (core) of the body
