What type of patients will use the Buerger-Allen exercises? - ANSWER-Patients with Buerger's, Raynauds, Elderly, Bedridden, or Early Stages Diabetes. What are the Buerger-Allen exercises? - ANSWER-A series of exercises administered to patients w/vascular disease. These exercises are repeated 6-7 times at each sitting and done several times a day. 1) Support legs in an elevated position at 60-90° for 30-180 sec or until you produce blanching of the extremity. The patient is instructed to actively dorsiflex and plantarflex the ankle throughout the procedure. 2) Allow feet to hang over the edge of the bed for 2-3 min or as long as it takes to produce hyperemia then add 1 min. The total time should not exceed 5 min. 3) Place legs in a horizontal position for 3-5 min. What is the purpose of the WILLIAM'S EXERCISES? - ANSWER-A group of exercises designed to reduce low back pain by strengthening the spinal mm of flexion and extension as well as the abdominals and gluteus maximus. Pt. is instructed to do set-ups w/the knees flexed, hands in front of the chest while the head and shoulders are lifted off the floor up to 6" so that the Iliopsoas m is not used. The posit. is held for 5 sec (or aslongas possible). What are the WILLIAM'S EXERCISES? - ANSWER-LBP; Flexion Exercises: 1) Abs crunches; in the 90/90 or Gouchers position. 2) Glut max: pelvic rocks or tilts 3) Stretch Hams, knee to chest What are the MCKENZIE'S EXERCISES? - ANSWER-Extension type exercises used for low back conditions. Can be used during the acute phase. (ie. Acute disc problems)
