Below are guidelines on how you should have answered the questions in the assignment. Each
student’s answer was different and was assessed individually. Marks were awarded on the
basis of the strength of your arguments and the practical application of theory to RCL.
Introduction
Include an introduction that clearly states the purpose of the essay and introduces the content
to follow. Provide a short explanation, in your own words, of your understanding of the field of
study of the assignment. Only one introduction is needed for the whole assignment (i.e., all four
questions).
This essay deals with RCL Foods, a leading African food producer in South Africa. The essay
presents the rationale for analysing the environments that influence the sustainability and the
success of RCL. The various methods that can be used to analyse the internal and external
environments are discussed, followed by an actual analysis of RCL. Lastly, the business level
strategy of RCL is discussed in relation to the environmental analyses that were conducted.
After you have written an introduction to your essay, you can start answering the questions. Use
headings, subheadings and numbering. It is important to provide structured and organised
answers to the assignment questions to enable the markers to locate the answer to each
question.
In academic writing, particularly in an essay, sentences, paragraphs and narratives are used to

2.1 Methods for analysing the internal environment (question 1a)
You should not merely copy and paste content from the prescribed material. Your answer to this
question should offer evidence of understanding. This part of the assignment serves as an
introduction to the next part of the assignment where you have to conduct an internal
environmental analysis (question 1b).
The internal environment of an organisation is commonly referred to as the operating
environment. Essentially, this environment consists of the factors that are within the control of
management or that can be managed through management decision-making. The aim of an
internal environmental analysis is to identify organisational strengths and weaknesses.
There are several methods that can be used to analyse the internal environment of an
organisation. The resource-based view is an approach that focuses on an organisation’s
resources and how they can be exploited through capabilities to build a sustainable competitive
advantage.
