Case study You are the investigator at Midrand Computer Technologies. You are mandated to investigate all incidents of crime and misconduct at the company. On Wednesday 12 October 2022, at 14:45, Ms Mpho Mokwena of the World of Computers, one of your loyal customers, phones you. She tells you that the previous day (Tuesday 11 October 2022 at 13:35) the driver of your delivery vehicle, Mr Melvin Naidoo, visited her in her office. He offered to sell her 2 CPU processors for R600 a piece. The normal retail price on these items is R1250.00 each. Melvin also offered more specials each month. He told Mpho that this is old stock that he buys at employee discount prices. If she bought from him, she could pay the money (via EFT) into his Captic bank account. Melvin proceeded to write down the banking details for a Captic bank account on a scrap of paper and handed it to Mpho. He said that he hoped to hear from her soon, then winked at her and left the office. Mpho tells you she was in her office in Westpark This study source was downloaded by from CourseH on :17:46 GMT -05:00 2 Complex in Midrand when Melvin approached her. Ms Jessica Stein, her secretary was also in the office and overheard everything. When making your own enquiries, Ms Jennifer Nel, who has worked at Midrand Computer Technologies for 15 years, comes forward with more information. Because of this you decide to use her as an informer. Jennifer tells you that she has heard (what she thought was office rumours) that the following two employees are stealing old stock from the storage lockers and are selling this to external non-suspecting customers: Ms Indira Kleinbooi, the stock controller responsible for making sure that the stock reflected on the invoices is loaded onto the delivery vehicles. Mr Melvin Naidoo, the driver responsible for the delivery of legitimately purchased stock to the customers: he removes the stock from the premises, after which he sells it to customers at a ‘discount price’. These two employees then share the proceeds. You ask Jennifer Nel to obtain further information which could assist you in your investigation. You review the CCTV footage for the past 6 months and you determine that Melvin is stealing stock. You commence planning for a surveillance operation on Melvin to monitor his movements, and to gather evidence of the illegal sale of the stolen stock. The criminal definition of theft is: The unlawful and intentional taking of corporeal property with the intention to permanently deprive the lawful owner of the commercial value thereof. FOR2608 Assignment 2
(DETAILED ANSWERS)
Semester 2 2023 (820483) - DUE
15 September 2023.

, QN1
To establish rapport before interviewing Ms. Mpho Mokwena as the complainant, I will follow a
structured approach aimed at building trust, showing empathy, and creating a comfortable
environment for her to share information. The goal is to make her feel valued and understood
throughout the interview process. Here's how I would go about it:

Preparation: Before the interview, I would familiarize myself with the details of the case study,
paying close attention to Ms. Mpho's encounter with Mr. Melvin Naidoo. This preparation
ensures that I can refer to specific information during the interview and demonstrate my
understanding of her situation.

Introduction: I will begin by introducing myself and my role as the investigator at Midrand
Computer Technologies. I'll explain the purpose of the interview, which is to gather information
about the incident she reported. This introduction helps establish transparency and clarity about
the interview's objectives.

Active Listening: As Ms. Mpho starts sharing her experience, I will actively listen to her without
interrupting. I'll maintain eye contact, nodding occasionally to show that I'm engaged and
attentive. This approach demonstrates respect for her perspective and allows her to express her
thoughts and feelings freely.

Empathy: I'll acknowledge the importance of her coming forward and express understanding of
the situation's potential impact on her. By showing empathy, I can create a supportive
atmosphere that encourages her to open up about her feelings and concerns.

Open-Ended Questions: I will ask open-ended questions to encourage her to provide detailed
responses and share her thoughts in her own words. For instance, I might ask, "Could you
please describe the interaction you had with Mr. Naidoo in your office?" This approach
encourages her to share more information beyond the basic facts.

Validation: I'll validate her experience by summarizing key points she shares and acknowledging
the emotions she might be feeling. This validation helps build trust by showing that I'm genuinely
interested in her perspective.

Avoiding Judgment: Throughout the interview, I will maintain a non-judgmental stance. I won't
make assumptions or express opinions about her actions or decisions. This approach ensures
that she feels safe sharing without fear of criticism.

Clarification: If any details are unclear or need further clarification, I'll ask for more information in
a respectful and considerate manner. This step ensures that I have a comprehensive
understanding of the incident.

Providing Information: I might share some information about the investigation process and
reassure her about confidentiality. This transparency helps alleviate any concerns she might
have about her involvement.

Closing: As the interview comes to an end, I'll express gratitude for her willingness to share her
experience. I'll inform her of the next steps in the investigation and assure her that her
contribution is valuable to resolving the matter.

By following this narrative approach, I aim to create a positive and comfortable environment for
Ms. Mpho Mokwena to share her experience openly and honestly during the interview.
