Unit 5: Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs

D.P8: Explain the arrangements for managing information between professionals

Confidentiality entails keeping information private and not disclosing information about
persons without their knowledge and consent, even to friends, family, or other individuals.
Confidentiality applies to all information relating to those who use health and social care
services. Confidentiality is important in health and social care as the principle of
confidentiality is concerned with privacy and respecting the wishes of others. It indicates
that professionals should not share personal information about others
(highspeedtraining.co.uk).

In order for the two of them to trust each other, Billy must believe that the doctor is not
criticising him. The major goal of the Data Protection Act is to safeguard patient
information so that it can be utilised for purposes other than delivering individualised care,
such as increasing patient and public welfare. To feel that he is being treated properly
despite his impairment, Billy must have faith in the doctor's competence to preserve his
privacy and that the Data Privacy Act is being followed. Every day, healthcare workers
access electronic Protected Health Information via password-protected EHRs.Billy may
choose not to consult a doctor because he is concerned about his information being public.
Transferring information from one healthcare professional to another who is entitled to
have access is critical for Tremayne because if his Support worker is not entitled to receive
information from the Occupational therapist, Tremayne may not be content with the care
he is receiving. If the Occupational Therapist needs to inform the Support Worker about
Tremaynes progress, it is critical that they meet in private so that the Occupational
Therapist and Social Worker can do their best to ensure that Tremayne receives all of the
support and information about the next steps so that he is at ease discussing the care that
he is getting.

D.M6: Analyse the impact of legislation and codes of practice relating to information
management on multidisciplinary working.

Code of practice
The Code of Practice for Social Care Workers and Care professionals is a collection of
statements that explain the principles of professional behaviour and practise that social
care workers must follow on a daily basis (scie.org.uk). It is the responsibility of social care
workers to make sure that they adhere to the Code's criteria. They must ensure that their
behaviour and practise do not fall below these standards, and that no action or omission on
their part undermines individuals' well-being. Billy's social worker would utilise the code of
practice to assist him achieve what is most important to him. The social worker's code of
practice is to respect Billy's dignity, privacy, preferences, culture, language, rights, beliefs,

perspectives, and wishes (socialcare.wales). Multidisciplinary teams provide numerous
benefits to both patients and health professionals that work on the team. Following the
code of practice, the team will improve Billy's health outcomes and satisfaction, as well as
make better use of resources and increase team members' work satisfaction. This would
benefit Billy since he would be at the centre of care, making it easier to deal with his health
and social issues (health.nsw.gov.au). The code of practice can help to resolve conflicts of
interest because its major objective is to provide precise safety and standards information
on specific work responsibilities, ensuring that the social worker is able to resolve all of
Billy's difficulties.

Health and Social Information Centre (HSCIC)
The obligation to share information is just as crucial as the need to maintain confidentiality.
The HSCIC Handbook to Confidentiality 2013 explains what health and care workers should
do and why in order to communicate information safely while adhering to confidentiality
rules. It addresses the following five confidentiality rules:

1. Sensitive information regarding service users or patients should be handled with
discretion and respect.
2. Members of a care team should communicate confidential information when it is
necessary for an individual's safe and effective care.
3. Anonymize information that is shared for the benefit of the community.
4. The right of an individual to object to the disclosure of confidential information
about them should be honoured.
5. Organisations should establish policies, processes, and systems to ensure that the
confidentiality standards are followed (digital.nhs.uk).

All health and social care proffesionals have both ethical and legal obligations to keep
patients' personal information private. However, appropriate information sharing is a
critical component of providing safe and effective care. Tremaynes carer cannot share his
information with third parties due to confidentiality guidelines. However, Tremaynes carer
can share his information with people working in the multidisciplinary team for Tremaynes
case so that every health and social professional can understand and help Tremayne to
improve his quality of life (gmc-uk.org). The guide to confidentiality can assist in
overcoming conflicts of interest because one of the main rules of the guide to
confidentiality is to handle sensitive information with discretion and respect. Tremaynes
information will be kept confidential, which may make him feel respected and that all of his
private information is safe.
