Assignment 2
(COMPLETE
ANSWERS)
Semester 2 2023
(545320) - DUE 15
August 2023
, Introduction
Optimising supply chain resource planning and inventory management with six Sigma in
a developing country like South Africa presents unique challenges, possibilities. This
writing will focus on how supply chain resource planning and inventory management
can be optimised in developing countries, production strategy, hierarchical planning
process, tools essential for inventory management and applying Lean and Six Sigma
principles will be discussed as well. Plus, a working example of a restaurant’s six Sigma
flow chart on sustainability will be provided.
1. Production strategies and hierarchical planning processes in terms of
material planning, and capacity planning.
To optimise supply chain resource planning and inventory management in
developing countries such as South Africa, production strategy and stratification
planning, the process should be carefully considered. These strategies and
processes can help efficient resource planning and operational capacity
planning.
Material planning is an important aspect of supply chain management.
Procurement and management of materials necessary for production in
developing countries have their own challenges linked to transport infrastructure,
reliability of suppliers, availability of raw materials. In such situations, it is
important to implement a production strategy which assist to minimise waste,
reduce costs and improve overall production.
One viable production strategy is Just-in-time (JIT) production. JIT aims to
produce goods on time or source materials to meet customer demand by
minimising inventory costs and reduce decreasing waste. JIT could be the
solution to countries with limited access to reliable and cheap transport to
execute sophisticated strategies. However, it offers an opportunity for improved
development of transportation infrastructure and build stronger relationships
suppliers increases efficiency.
