1.Anthropology as a discipline. (What does it study? What are its core principles?)
a.Anthropology in the 21st century engages with the interaction of people, ideas, images, and things that continue to intensify over a period of time. The definition of ‘anthropology,’ according to the course’s textbook is, “the study of the full scope of human diversity, past and present, and the application of that knowledge to help people of different backgrounds better understand one another. The roots of anthropology lie in the 18th and 19th centuries. Franz Boas is one of the first founders of American anthropology. b.Cultural anthropologists study how people act. They study human behavior through the habit of noticing. They notice the beliefs of people through the process of asking and observing individuals. Cultural anthropologists study learned behavior within a culture; they listen to people’s understanding of what is happening within their environment, they empathize with other individuals, and highlight issues worldwide. c.As a whole, anthropologists compare practices, beliefs, and experiences across multiple cultures. They understand power dynamics and authoritative positions within a culture. Anthropologists trace change over time-how people experience, document, and describe things. They do this by asking people about their life stories/histories. 2.Anthropology and its 4 fields. (What are they? What do they focus on?)
a.Archaeology = the study of the human pasty by using material remains b.Bio-anthropology = human and non-human primate evolution by observing ecology, behavior, and biocultural variation c.Linguistic Anthropology = the ways that language reflects/influences social life d.Social-Cultural Anthropology = examines social patterns and processes within and across cultures 3.Anthropology and Globalization a.The roots of anthropology and fieldwork lie in the intense globalization of the late
19th century. b.In an anthropological sense, globalization is, “an intensification of interconnectedness, suggesting a world full of movement and mixture, contact and
linkages, and persistent cultural interaction and exchange.
4.Culture a.“that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, law, morals, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society” https://socialsci.libretexts.org/Courses/HACC_Central_Pennsylvania
