P1- Describe the structure and organisation of the retail sector

Retailing
The UK retail sector is the 3rd largest retail sector in the world.
In 2012 there were around 290,000 retail outlets in the UK.
In the same year UK retail sales were over £311 billion, with £29 billion of this made from
Internet retail sales.Retailing is selling products or services to consumers/customers for their
own use, Examples of retail stores are Primark, Next, River Island and Tesco. There are
thousands and thousands of different retail stores across the country. Retailers are a vital
part of the business world as they add value to products and services.

Types of stores
online and physical stores - To make it easier for some people as they are not able to go
shopping, many retailing stores offer e Retailing which this allows customers to purchase
online. This is very convenient for customers as many are too busy to shop in store, also
they will have more variety of choice of what they want to buy as their are a wider range of
products online. And also the cost of good might be cheaper as there might be sales online
and customers are able to compare online which would be easier.
Click and bricks - This allows customers to purchase their products online and and be able
to pick this up afterwards in store. Also this can also allow products to be returned or
exchanged in store.

1. Structure of the retail industry

The structured of the retail industry has become more diverse due to expansions
of brands in different type of location. The structure of retail can be noticed from
number of perspectives such as the size and profitability, Trends in sale and other
aspects.

The organizational structure of a retail store will vary by the size and type of the business. A
lot of the tasks involved with operating a retail business will be the same, or have some
overlap. However, small or independent retail stores may combine many sectors together
under one division, while larger stores create various divisions for each particular function
along with many layers of management.

For example, a small specialty shop may have all of its employees under one category
called Store Operations. A large department store may have a complete staff consisting of a
manager, assistant manager and sales associates for its Sporting Goods department, Home
and Garden, Bed and Bath, and each additional department.

Not-for-profit and public place retailers

There has been a growth in not for profit retailers such as Oxfam, Cancer research. They
sell goods brought in by donors and use voluntary staff. The growth can be as people are
becoming aware of their aims and objectives and thus feel compassionate towards their
cause.
