MIP2601
ASSIGNMENT 4 (YEAR MODULE)
DUE DATE: 23 August 2023
Written Assignment Submission Guidelines:
Please ensure that your assignment is submitted electronically through the myUnisa platform no later than
23 August 2023. Kindly note that fax or email submissions will not be accepted.
This assignment covers unit 1 of the study guide, as well as the Curriculum and
Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) document.
Question 1: Policy matters
Study pages 21 to 29 of the CAPS: Mathematics – Intermediate Phase, which contain the Intermediate
Phase overview for Space and Shape (Geometry) and Measurement, then respond to the following
questions:
1.1 Critically review the progression from Grade 4 to Grade 6 for each of the six topics that fall under
the content area, Space and Shape (Geometry). Write a short paragraph (three sentences) on each
topic that you discuss and motivate whether the progression provides sufficient cognitive and
conceptual challenges at the relevant grade levels. (14)
Answer:
Topic 1: Shape Recognition and Naming: Consider whether the progression introduces more complex
shapes and their attributes as students advance through grades. Are the challenges appropriately
scaffolded to help students transition from simple to more complex shapes?
Topic 2: Lines and Symmetry: Analyze how the understanding of lines, symmetry, and types of
symmetry (such as reflective and rotational) deepens from Grade 4 to Grade 6. Are students exposed
to real-world examples and higher-order questions that require critical thinking?
Topic 3: Quadrilaterals: Evaluate how students' knowledge of quadrilaterals evolves, possibly starting
with basic properties and advancing to more specific attributes of various quadrilaterals.
Topic 4: 3D Shapes: Assess whether students progress from understanding 2D shapes to exploring 3D
shapes. Are they exposed to concepts like nets and surface area, building on their prior knowledge?
