Explain the contribution to the development and expression of Islam of
A’isha Bint Abu Bakr

Background:
- Born in mecca 607CE
- Daughter of Abu Bakr, the first rightly guided caliph
- Married prophet muhammed when she was 7
- Performed all 5 pillars of faith
- Memorised the Quran

Contribution:
1. Education and - She spent a lot of time studying and discussing the Quran with the prophet
interpretation of - Gave her valuable insight and wisdom
sacred texts - Was able to share her knowledge both orally and in writing to islamic people
- She interpreted the meaning of many quranic verses
- Contributed to the debate around various verses
- Many of her ideas became key to Islamci education

come get her but no one did, so she got on the back of a camel with another man which caused lots of controversy as

- As a result the law was introduced that adultery must have four witnesses
- Sura 24:4 “and those that accuse honourable women but bring not four witnesses… never accept their testimony”

- Sharia acts as a code for living that all Muslims should adhere to, including prayers, fasting and donations to the poor. It
aims to help Muslims understand how they should lead every aspect of their lives according to God's wishes.
- The long chapter of Hadiths transmitted by Aisha contains traditions which variously recount anecdotes from
Muhammad’s life and discusses when the legal punishment for theft is to be imposed
- Showed adherents how to live by Allah’s will

3. Spread of the Muhammed died in 632

- Also spread her word through directly educating students in Mecca
- Students came from many places throughout the world
- She taught them the importance of the faith, who then grew up to spread islam
- Taught many children the fundamentals and importance of islam

1. Women Aisha lived in the times of ‘jahiliyya’ also known as ‘the days of ignorance where women had little rights and little respect
- Due to her being an amazing scholar she was able to:
- increase respect
- taught men that women could also be educated
- Make women realise they themselves were capable of being educated (even though they were told they couldn't their
whole lives)
- She openly discussed the rights of women
- Encouraged leadership beyond the household
