Assignment 3
UPDATED VERSION 2023.
2.1 “Mathematics is a language that makes use of symbols and notations to describe
numerical, geometric and graphical relationships” (DBE 2011:8). Identify key concepts from
this definition and give an example in each case. (10)
The mentioned mathematics language helps to develop mental processes that enhance logical
and critical thinking, accuracy and problem-solving that will contribute in decision-
making(DBE2011:8). Examples of these would include
● Numbers, Operations and Relationships - multiply effectively and have precise mental
calculation skills.
● Patterns, Functions and Algebra - using functions to make predictions, what number
comes next in the sequence.
● Space and Shape (Geometry) - Be able to draw two-dimensional shapes and build 3D
objects.
● Measurement - measure angles, area, perimeter and capacity/volume. Different
measuring tools
● Data Handling - a variety of contexts for collecting and interpreting data, interpreting
statistics off a graph.
2.2 To develop essential mathematics skills, the learner should develop the correct use of
language of Mathematics. How would you, as the teacher, clarify the meaning of fraction
as “part of a whole where the whole is a single object” to a grade 4 learner? Use two
different representations to illustrate your answer. (6)
I would first show examples of wholes, then half and quarters and how they make a whole when
adding them.
Then I would first show the picture of a whole orange. Then give learners 2 pictures of the same
orange to cut into 2 and the other into 4.
I will show an image of 2 half of oranges, then 4 quarter oranges. I will then have them put the
pieces together to show it makes a whole.
, 2.3 Answer the first three questions under “some clarification notes or teaching guidelines” on
page 287 of the intermediate phase mathematics policy document (CAPS) (3)
