Chapter 1. Psychopharmacology in Perspective

Essay questions.

Q. When did the modern era of psychopharmacology begin and what events were most associated with its
beginning?

A (p. 6-7). It began in the 1950’s with the discovery that chlorpromazine reduced or eliminated many of the
core symptoms of schizophrenia in a much more specific fashion than previous drugs and with (apparently)
lower toxicity. With this discovery, there was a dramatic change in the treatment of mental illness. This led
to many pharmaceutical companies attempting to formulate other similar drugs, one of which (imipramine)
was found to be very effective in the treatment of depression. It also provided evidence that certain forms
of mental illness had a biochemical basis, rather than being due to purely environmental conditions (e.g.,
“bad” parenting).

Q. What events led to the position taken by the Food and Drug Administration that tobacco should be
regulated by the agency?

A (p. 17). It was determined that tobacco companies knew that tobacco was in effect a nicotine delivery
system that was intended to provide nicotine to satisfy users’ addiction, which according to the Federal
Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act made nicotine legally a drug.

Q. Describe the “harm reduction” approach to dealing with drug abuse.

A (p. 15). Harm reduction is a pragmatic approach to diminishing the individual and social harm associated
with drug use—especially the risk of HIV infection. It is an effort designed to prevent criminal prosecution
from being more damaging to the individual drug user than the relevant drug itself. The approach
encompasses a wide range of drug user services including making clean needles and syringes available to
injecting drug users, increasing access to methadone treatment, and providing addicts with clean supplies of
the drugs to which they are addicted.

Q. What was Sigmund Freud’s contribution to the field of psychopharmacology?

A (p. 5). Early in his career, he spent three years investigating the physiological and psychological effects
of cocaine, e.g., on fatigue, depression, strength and morphine addiction.
