Matthew Howard
Unit 11 Aim C
Using investigative techniques for road traffic collisions.
I am a trainee forensic science technician. My supervisor has asked me to investigate a
simulated road traffic collision. I am required to produce a detailed collision investigation
report where I will analyse my findings as well as justifying and evaluating the procedures and
the choice of equipment used. This report will be used to assist forensic scientists with real-life
road traffic collisions.
Description of the road traffic collision:
When first arriving at the scene a red Audi Q2 can be seen located in the middle of the road
with the driver's side door wide open. A bike can be seen heavily damaged located next to the
passenger side front wheel, this bike's wheel has been broken off as well as the front frame
being smashed in half, it is clear that it has collided with the side of the car. The collision
between the bike and the car caused the front right headlight to smash with glass located on
the floor. This suggests that this collision was at a relatively high speed as the damage is
significant. As the site of the collision was studied further there was a range of evidence that
can help with the investigation. The cyclist's helmet was located on the other side of vehicle
along with the glasses which have been broken, the right side of the glass has been
disconnected which may suggest that the cyclist hit their head during the accident. Blood was
also located next to these objects, which suggests that the injuries were fairly serious. A was
located on the floor of the driver's side as well as a flask with a type of liquid inside it.
State of road:
The state of the road can commonly be an important factor in figuring out what happened in a
road traffic collision, in this case there are no markings on the road from where the car came
from. This suggests that the car was not going at a high speed as it would have left tyre marks if
it had to come to a stop at a high speed. This concludes that the driver was not speeding and
there was a different factor that caused this road traffic collision.
List of evidence:

• Helmet- G
• Glasses- B
• Blood- C
• Bicycle- F
• Headlight- H
• Phone- D
• Flask- E

, Measurements of evidence:
The measurements of how far the evidence is from the car is important in understanding what
happened in the incident. The helmet that was located next to the front right wheel was 1.1m
to the car. The broken glasses were located 0.m to the helmet and 1 m to the car its self. On the
other side of the car was located the bike wheel and the bike itself, the back of the bicycle tyre
was 1.6m from the bonnet of the car with the front of the bike touching the car. This suggests
that the bike collided with the front right hand side of the vehicle.

Sketches and plans:
This birds eye view drawing of the drawing shows the location of all of the evidence with the
direction shown. This information helps to piece together what happened during the road
traffic collision.

The photo shown below helps to identify all of the damage on both the car and the bike.
