Fraser et al (1990:139) define a teaching method as “the various classroom activities planned by
the teacher, which must always take the main components of the didactic situation (pupils,
teachers and content) into consideration’’. There is no formula that beginner teachers can use
to select a method for a specific teaching situation. Various factors mean that a variety of
methods – and even more than one in the same lesson situation – should be used in teaching
Business Studies. These factors include the teacher’s personality and talents, and the learners’
abilities, level of knowledge and level of experience, as well as the distinctive nature of the
subject, class size and facilities and the purpose of the lesson in question.

activities in order to achieve an outcome. This implies that the Business Studies teacher should
formulate a cohesive plan that outlines the approach that she or he intends to take to enable
learners to achieve the intended learning outcomes in a lesson (Van der Horst & McDonald
2001:133). There are many teaching strategies. It is up to you as a novice teacher or teacher in
training to decide on the approach to use to introduce Business Studies to your learners. As a
