On 16 May 2018, American socialite, Kim Kardashian posted on Instagram. Her post
advertised appetite suppressant lollipops. Kim was criticised for the post because she was
promoting unsafe products to her audience of women. Women already suffer with negative
body image. A negative body image can cause eating disorders, body dysmorphia and
unhealthy habits. Social media contributes to a woman’s negative body image. Social
media is evil.
Social networks can have a positive effect on women such as the rise of feminism. People
use social media to promote gender equality and dismantle the patriarchy. However, social
networks damage the mind’s and bodies of women.
The female body is praised on social networks. The woman is only praised if she is tall and
slim with curves. She must have high cheekbones, a small nose and full lips. Women that
do not look like this are made to feel ugly and insecure. We need to treat our bodies with
love & respect, yet social networks make this hard for us because they present us with
toxic beauty standards.
Historically and mythologically, women have always been considered untrustworthy,
threatening and dangerous. Examples including Medusa who could turn men into stone.
Society is scared of women and the power of female sexuality. A woman is threatening
when she owns her sexuality and takes strength from it. Society promotes the idea that a
woman loses something when she flaunts or embraces her sexuality. This woman is
scrutinized, objectified and degraded.
Social networks encourage women and young girls to prioritise The current use of social
networks are detrimental to the advancement of society, especially to the advancement of
women.
