With the separation of racial groups through the Group Areas Act of 1950 came the development of ‘townships’ which were poorly designed and crime ridden, generally far from the economic hub of a city (Fiske & Ladd, 2004). This meant that many black parents often left home very early in the morning and came back late or had to live away from home because it was too far to travel and too expensive to commute. In your view, how did the circumstances described in the above passage influence the upbringing of young children, socially (2x1) and educationally (3x2)? (8) 4 2.2 There is a view that early childhood education in South Africa is still grounded in a Eurocentric/Westernised approach. Critique this view, stating whether you agree or disagree with it and present FOUR reasons to support your position. (10) 2.3 Read the following excerpt and answer the questions that follow. 2.3.1 What is your understanding of indigenous knowledge? Give an example. (2) 2.3.2 Do you think the current Foundation Phase curriculum values African knowledge and culture? Or is it imposing a Eurocentric view that began with South Africa’s colonisation? To answer this question, make your view clear in one statement then write FOUR points to justify (support) your view. (10) 2.3.3 Define the meaning of Ubuntu (2 marks) and explain how teachers can apply the philosophy of Ubuntu as a guiding principle in the education of young children (3x2). (8) QUESTION 3: (22) 3.1 Read the excerpt below and answer the question that follows. 3.1.1 As a Foundation Phase teacher, what would you do to show that parental ethno-theories influence your teaching? Provide THREE points (3x2). (6) 3.2 The history of early childhood education (ECE) shows that there are different individuals (men and women) who played critical roles in the development, growth and spread of ECE in the world. Choose ONE (1) such individual from the Study Guide and justify your choice in terms of the contribution the individual made in the growth of ECE. Excerpt Ebrahim (2012) argues that a global view of early childhood education has diminished the value of indigenous knowledge and alternative ways of doing. In the same vein, Prochner and Kabiru (2008) suggest that a foreign way of educating children gained currency during colonisation. Excerpt Parents have ideas of what constitutes good education for their children. These ideas are called parental ethno-theories and are embedded in community practices and rituals. It is important for Foundation Phase teachers to become aware of parental ethno-theories. HED2601/ASSESSMENT 2/0/2023 5 Write in the first person using “I”, e.g., “I chose so and so for the following reasons . . .”. Provide at least FIVE points (5x2). (10). 3.3 There are several ways of viewing quality ECE. Choose ONE element of quality which you consider to be the most important in ECE settings. Then write three short paragraphs arguing why you think this is the most important element of quality in ECE and Foundation Phase. Each paragraph must contain a different reason so that you can get 2 marks for each paragraph (3x2). (6) QUESTION 4: (17) 4.1 As early as 1996, the South African democratic government realised that ECE was multi-faceted. What is your understanding of ECE as a multifaceted phase of children’s development? Provide at least THREE points. (5) 4.2 Why do teachers need a curriculum? Provide TWO reasons. (2) 4.3 Draw a flow diagram showing the evolution of the South African school curriculum from 1994 until present. (8) The flow diagram must include the following: • The abbreviated (shortened) name of each curriculum • The year in which each curriculum was first introduced in schools • The main feature of each curriculum • A key at the bottom spelling out the abbreviated names (writing the names in full). 4.4 “Changing the curricula or policies does not automatically equal transformation”. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why? (2) TOTAL 100
