GCSE Combined Science Edexcel Physics – Paper 1 Foundation Tier Predicted Paper 2023 attached with correct marking scheme Name …………………………………………………………………… Date ………………… 1 hour 15 minutes allowed. You may use a calculator and an Edexcel equation sheet. Grade boundaries These are VERY rough guesses! Getting a 4 on this paper does not guarantee you the same mark in the exam. • 5-5 60% • 4-4 50% • 3-3 40% • 2-2 30% • 1-1 20% 01 a) Explain why we use the term ‘model of the atom’. [2 marks] b) The image shows part of the periodic table, this part is for carbon. Compare carbon 12 and carbon 14. You should include the numbers of electrons, protons and neutrons. [4 marks] c) The term atom is from the Greek atomon for ‘uncuttable’ since Democritus an Ancient Greek philosopher came up with the idea of atoms. We now know that within atoms there are a few sub-atomic particles. Explain how the model of the atom has changed over the years, you should include the contributions of Thompson; Rutherford; Bohr and Chadwick and each of electrons, protons and neutrons. [6 marks] _ 02 a) There are two factors that affect how long a car takes to stop, together these give us the stopping distance of a car. Select these two factors. Tick two boxes only. [2 marks] Car distance Thinking distance Road distance Working distance Braking distance b) A car travelled from home to school. Just as it turned the corner a cat dashed out in front of the car and the driver suddenly applied 55,500N of force to the brakes. The car came to a full stop allowing the cat to safely get across the road. The mass of the car and passengers was 1,500 kg. i. Select the correct equation to calculate acceleration. Tick one box only. [1 mark] distance travelled = speed x time force = mass × acceleration acceleration = change in velocity time taken force = spring constant x extension ii. Calculate the acceleration that the car used to brake. [3 marks] m/s2 iii. Select the correct equation to calculate the time taken to stop. Tick one box only. [1 mark] distance travelled = speed x time force = mass × acceleration acceleration = change in velocity time taken force = spring constant x extension iv. The car was travelling at 15m/s before it started to brake. Thus, calculate the time taken for the car to stop. If no answer was found for part bii use the value of 40 for acceleration (this is not the correct answer for part bii). Give your answer to 1 decimal place. [4 marks] c) The journey that the car took from home to school is described below, sketch a distance time graph for this journey. [4 marks] 7.45 – leave home 7.52 – stop at traffic lights for 4 minutes 7.55- get caught in lots of slow-moving traffic 8.05 – see cat running across road near school 8.10 – get to school d) Different factors can affect the stopping distance when a driver is braking. i. Describe three human factors that affect the stopping distance of a car. [3 marks] ii. Describe three factors related to the car and how they affect the stopping distance. [3 marks] 03 A student wanted to investigate how varying the force on an object affects the acceleration. They set up the equipment as shown in the diagram above. a) To get results for this experiment, several measurements needed to be taken. Match these measurements to their units. Draw four lines only. [4 marks] Mass Seconds Force Newtons Time Centimetres Distance Kilograms b) Describe how the force in this set up was changed. [2 marks] c) The mass is a control variable and needs to be kept constant. Describe how this is achieved. [2 marks] d) If the mass of the car was 750g, convert this into kilograms. [1 mark] e) The weight on the stack was 7N at the start of the experiment. Select the best equation to determine the mass. [1 mark] Force = spring constant × extension Weight = mass x gravity Resultant force = mass × acceleration Momentum = mass × velocity f) Calculate the mass on the stack. Gravity was constant in this experiment and can be taken to be 10N/Kg. [2 marks] Kg g) Thus, calculate the total mass used. [1 mark] h) Seat belts can be used to keep occupants of cars safe in the event of an accident. Explain how. [5 marks] 04 a) Sketch and label a transverse wave. [3 marks] b) Define the term “frequency” with regards to waves. [2 marks]
