Bordered by Haiti on the east it is mostly mountains with fertile valleys. Throughout the island are bateys or clusters of shacks hidden within those areas that house predominately Haitian refugees and impoverished Dominican nationals. With temperatures ranging in the 90’s with humidity 70% or higher, these people groups are often seen with typical tropical diseases including scabies and parasitic infections.
