HOW TO COPY YOUR WIKI INTO THIS TEMPLATE
You will see that the first question below asks you to copy your wiki into this template. You
may have to copy and paste the text and the images from your wiki separately. First, select
all the text in your wiki, come back to this template, right-click and select “Paste”.
After pasting the text of your wiki into the template you have to copy the pictures (if you
have any) and paste them where you want them to appear. There are two ways to get a
picture from your wiki into the template:
1) The simple way. Right-click on the picture on your wiki, select "Copy image", come
back to the template, right click and select "Paste".
2) The long way. If the simple way doesn't work for you (it depends on how your
computer is set up) then do the following: Right-click on the picture on your wiki,
select "Save image" and save it somewhere on your computer. Next, come back to
the template, go to the "Insert" tab, select "Picture", go to where the picture is on
your computer, select the picture and click on "Insert".
HOW TO CONVERT YOUR PORTFOLIO TO A PDF DOCUMENT
You can submit your portfolio as a Word document or in pdf format. If you have lots of
pictures you may find that the Word document is too big to submit. In that case, just
convert it to pdf before submitting it. From the “File” menu choose “Save as” and then
choose PDF as the file type. When you submit, you can choose to submit the .pdf version of
the document rather than the .doc or .docx version. It is up to you.
Now please answer the questions below in the spaces provided.

editing, or even include additional material. We will not look at your wiki
online, but only at the copy that you put below.
(Put your wiki here – you can use as much space as you like.)
BACKGROUND
What is a prostitute? Ask this question and an image of a drug ridden woman wearing a
mini skirt and 3-inch heels standing on the corner of a dodgy and cold street will come
to mind.
This is the image portrayed by the media and is largely what we have been told to
believe by politicians, religious organisations and certain branches of feminism.
However, sex work is so much more than the image you have in your head. It's true
definition is linked to the commercial sexual services offered, the types of sex work they
perform, where sex work takes place, and why people engage in it.
So, what really is prostitution? From the dictionary, we learn that prostitution is "the
practice of engaging in relatively indiscriminate sexual activity, in general with someone
who is not a spouse or a friend, in exchange for immediate payment in money or other
valuables."
, This industry is illegal in South Africa but the number of prostitutes choosing this
profession increases yearly, and at the same time, the number of underaged victims who
are forced into and depend on those who exploit them increases yearly.
In 2013 the Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Task Force (SWEAT) estimated that
there were between 121,000 and 167,000 prostitutes in South Africa.
Child prostitution is a problem in the country. I believe this is due to the number of
vulnerable children who are desperate to get out of the slums in any way
possible. Criminal gangs recruit children from poor rural areas and take them to larger
cities for commercial sexual exploitation. South Africa has become one of the major
destinations for underage sex tourism in Africa. There has also been an increase in
demand for sex with children due to the belief that they are free of the Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This makes them valuable, in demand and therefore easier
to 'sell'.
ChildLine, a national organisation in South Africa that offers holistic services for abused
children and their families, reports the following:
- One in four children in South Africa will be abused sometime in childhood.
- Just as many boys as girls under the age of ten years are sexually abused.
- A total of 80% of the offenders of sexual abuse are known to, and trusted by, the child
victims.
- There has been a significant increase in young offenders (under the age of 18 years)
who sexually abuse children.
- A total of 99% of sexual abuse perpetrators are men.
- Worldwide, only 5% of offenders of sexual abuse are convicted (ChildLine Brochure
2004).
