HOW DOES JEROBOAM REMIND US OF MOSES? / WHAT DID JEROBOAM AND MOSES HAVE IN
COMMON? / WHICH (LITERARY) CHARACTERISTICS DID MOSES AND JEROBOAM HAVE IN
COMMON? (4) OR (6)

1. Both characters come from a privileged house.
2. They identify with the oppressed.
3. They flee from their oppressor (Pharao and Rehoboam).
4. They return when the oppressor is dead.
5. They negotiate with the new ruler (the new Pharao and Abijah).
6. They lead the people away from oppression.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SYRO-EPHRAIMITE WAR?

It was a war occurring around 735 BCE in which Syria and the northern kingdom of Israel laid siege to
Jerusalem and thus attempted to force Judah, under King Ahaz, to join a coalition of local states
resisting Assyrian rule (though Judah was not yet under the Assyrian rule). Ahaz appealed for and
received help from Assyria in repelling the Syrian–Israelite alliance but became subject to Assyria in
return for the aid.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT AMOS?

Amos was a shepherd from Tekoa in the South that predicts judgement and destruction for the North.
Preaches Exodus theology. Prophecies in the time of Jeroboam II. Amos criticises the Northern elite.
His prophecies strongly focussed on social justice. The focus of the teaching is on social acts and
their national consequences. Amos does not consider himself to be a professional prophet, he only
prophesies because tells him to. He preaches against election theology. His prophecies were not
accepted, and the high priest tells him to go home and prophecy there. Judeans reinterpret Amos’
prophecies about Assyrian domination.

1. Divine appearance of God before Isaiah
2. An introductory word by God
3. The call of the prophet/leader (Isaiah)
4. An objection from the prophet
