DNA
DNA
• Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is a polymer made by joining together mononucleotides.
• A nucleotide consists of 3 components:
o A phosphate group.
o A deoxyribose sugar (5-carbon sugar).
o A nitrogen-containing organic base (adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine).
• A phosphate ion bonds to 2-deoxyribose, which bonds to one of the four bases.
• Adenine and guanine are purine bases (double rings).
• Cysteine and thymine are pyrimidine bases (single rings).
