Question 1: Ubuntu

Meaning of Ubuntu:
Ubuntu is an African philosophy derived from Nguni language and culture. The literal
translating is ‘a person is a person through other people’. It simply means that the person
that I become is because of the community I come from and from the community that
helped me. It is an idea of thoughtfulness and helpfulness towards others. A philosophy of
life and the practice of being humane towards others. It is a belief that each person depends
on the interdependence of one another.

The values that ubuntu hold true are, caring, humanity, compassion, unity, empathy,
respect, kindness, consideration towards others, and sharing. It is about building a
sustainable community. Ubuntu is passing along values and teachings that have been
passed through the generations that have come before. It is maintaining relationships with
everyone in the community.

Due to ubuntu focusing on the community, it becomes an inclusive culture. A culture where
no one is left behind. An interdependent society, therefore, whether you are young or old,
rich or poor, each person is considered valuable and will help the next person. A culture of
dignity for all.

Ubuntu in the classroom:

values of ubuntu into our classrooms, the future looks positive.

A classroom culture of togetherness, will surely bring about, encouraging the active

 Teachers should promote ubuntu:
Teachers should practice ubuntu in the classroom, by being competent, caring and

mandatory. A classroom that respects the learning of all learners, will help develop
all learners.

Teachers must also have a reflective look at what they are doing in a classroom
environment promotes the empowerment of the learners. The outcome of learning
is the ability to complete tasks and solve problems with the knowledge that has
