“How does innovation affect my life?”
Previously I mentioned that innovation affected me through being able to for example access
medicine, which improves my health, lifespan and well-being. Additionally, innovation is
making life more convenient for me, by me for example being able to use my computer for
schoolwork, instead of handwriting everything.
Currently, I still hold this viewpoint but I would like to add a couple of other aspects. This
course made me also realize that I am surrounded by innovators amongst me. They may not
be that famous or well-known, but they also create innovations that help me and others and
make my life easier to live by solving my problems. It can be something very small, such as
showing me a faster way to cook something, which is also innovative since it saves me time
and shows me a new way of cooking. Innovation also affects what I deem normal and
something that’s ” everyday” in my life. For example, for people now it is normal to walk
around with a smartphone that contains a perfect camera, GPS and other aspects whilst for
people that lived a hundred years ago, it is something unimaginable. Therefore, innovations
can be very life-altering and constantly evolving and changing the living standards for
everyone, including me. As an example when I was a kid, I started off having a Nokia phone
just like everyone else at that time, without a touchscreen. Now I can not imagine myself
having it again, since I am so used to the new standard of quality, and having everything by
my fingertips. It is the same regarding school. I remember when starting school, I always had
to write assignments by hand, but since around the 8th grade I have had to use a computer for
everything. At first, I did not notice the shift, but now as I look back on it, I see that
innovation altered my life unexpectedly and in a way that I did not notice at the time.
Therefore, innovation will always affect me and my life, in unknown ways right now, but
when I will look back, I will always be able to pinpoint the point when the innovations
changed my life.
“How does innovation relate to my chosen
areas of study and degree?”
Currently, I still believe that innovation is very tightly linked to business management since
for businesses to operate successfully, they need to be innovative and stick out from the
crowd. Innovation is also helpful when marketing products since you want to show potential
customers the benefits of using your product and make them want to have it.
After this course, I still hold this viewpoint but I would like to add a couple of other aspects.
This course made me realize that my choice of degree and study is perfect for pursuing a
career in innovation. Everything in business management is so interlinked to innovation, and
I had not thought about it before. As an example marketing and consumer behaviour can be
linked to innovation, since for products to be successful, you need to have an innovative
marketing style that consumers recognise, and they also need to capture the consumer’s
interest by showing how their innovation can solve their problem. You also need to show
through marketing how you differentiate yourself from other competing brands and
companies that offer similar products as yours. Businesses also need to understand how
customers feel about their innovation, whether it addresses their needs, and which sort of
consumers would be interested in their product. Therefore, I have realized how interlinked
innovation is with business management, and that I actually had a lot of knowledge in
innovation before this course too. This course made me realize the links between them more
clearly.
