Nutrition and Disease Malnutrition is the physical state of unbalanced nutrition. [ CITATION Ell19 l 1033 ] The most common way that people think of malnutrition is of someone that is skinny or frail because they do not eat enough. This is one form of malnutrition, but there are other cases as well. Since it is defined as “unbalanced nutrition”, it means that it can be a lack of or over consumption of certain essential nutrients. In the U.S., it is much more common for a person to become malnourished by overconsuming. However, there are still cases of people that are lacking nutrients in their diet. This could be occurring because they do not have money to buy food so they are reliant on what they are given or can find. This can lead to someone not consuming what their body needs but instead whatever they can get. This may also be occurring because a person’s variety of foods are limited. For example, in 2002, there was a Scurvy outbreak in Afghanistan due to a lack of fruits and vegetables. [ CITATION Est19 l 1033 ] Following a war and drought, that part of the world only had limited amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, which caused the disease outbreak.
