Religious Information – GCSE EXAM (Paper 1)
RI – Creation
GENESIS 1
“In the beginning…” God has always existed, he is eternal. He is the uncaused first cause, that caused everything
to come into existence.
“…and the Spirit of God is a Triune God, the Holy Spirit is clearly eternal too, co-existing with the Father, the
God was moving over creator. This line emphasises God’s Transcendence (above time, outside of time) that God
the water.” is an omnipotent God who can create things from nothing (ex nihilo).
“Let there be light” God is an OP God who can create everything by word alone, he has the power to do
whatever he wants.

God does not require anything beyond his own word to create because he is beyond the
created world – he is transcendent.
“God was pleased God is an OP God, but also an omnibenevolent God because he loves his creation, and he
with what he saw.” blesses it. God has the power not only to make everything exactly the way he wants, but
also that creation in the beginning was perfect, didn’t have any imperfections in it.

This is the first evidence that humans have FREE WILL, because we know that the world
does have imperfections in it (moral and natural evil) so the suggestion here is that it is the
fault of humans that people suffer due to, say, natural disasters.
Genesis 1:28 God tells Adam and Eve to ‘subdue’ the STEWARDSHIP
earth and ‘have dominion’ over every living This suggests that humans have been given
thing. power and authority to rule over all other
creatures.
Genesis 1:27 Genesis 1 states that God made humans ‘in DIGNTY
his image’ All humans are equal because they have all
been created by God and share in the
qualities of God.

For Catholics, this means that all people have
dignity – they are worthy of honour and
respect.
Genesis 1:28 In Genesis 1, God blesses humans after he SANCTITY OF LIFE
creates the world. Catholics believe that all creation is holy
because it has been created and blessed by
God – this is known as the sanctity of life.
GENESIS 2

Genesis 2:15 God puts Adam in the garden of Eden to ‘till STEWARDSHIP
it and keep it’. This suggests we should look after the world
with care and love.

Christians have a duty to look after the
environment on behalf of God.

Laudato Si 67—68 “This responsibility for God's earth means STEWARDSHIP
that human beings ... must respect the Christians believe the world is a gift from God,
laws of nature” but God expects them to protect and care for
the world in return.
Youcat 280 "Every person, from the first moment of his DIGNITY
life in the womb, has an inviolable dignity” Catholics believe that everyone should
respect their own dignity and the dignity of
other people.

This belief means Catholics are against
practices that do not respect people’s dignity,
such as exploiting the poor and racial
discrimination.
Youcat 15 “The Bible is not meant to convey precise
historical information or scientific findings
to us.”
Dei Verbum 9 “Sacred Scripture is the word of God… Shows that Catholics believe the Bible is the

Dei Verbum 12 “…the interpreter of Sacred Scripture ...
should carefully investigate what meaning
the sacred writers really intended”
Pope Francis, “The Big Bang ... does not contradict the As the Bible is not to be interpreted literally,

Youcat 16 “The right way to read Sacred Scriptures is
to read it prayerfully”

Jesus “Love your neighbour as yourself.” CARE FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
For Christians the word ‘neighbour’ includes
all the people they share the world with.

, So, Christians are expected to understand
how pollution and littering will affect all
human life, including future generations.
Laudato Si 159 “…the world is a gift which we have freely
received and must share with others.”
Pope Francis quoting “Everyone’s talents and involvement are Shows that the Catholic Church teaches that
