THE GLORIOUS REVOLUTION
- The parliament asks William of Orange, protestant ruler from the Netherlands, to
invade England and proclaim himself King which happened with no fighting and was
called The Glorious Revolution

A GLOBAL POWER

- The Bill of Rights in 1689 confirmed the king could no longer raise taxes or administer
justice without parliament which formed the start of a constitutional monarchy
- Whigs and Tories were the main political groups
- Hugenots were Protestants that came From france who were prosecuted
- The Act of Union in 1707 created Great Britain because it united England and Scotland
- George I became king after Queen Anne died - He was German and could not speak
English, needing a minister
- The role of Prime minister emerged with Sir Robert Whirpole being the First prime
minister
- Highland Clearances happened when Scottish landlords destroyed individual small
farms to make space for livestock

18TH CENTURY - THE ENLIGHTENMENT
- New ideas about politics, philosophy and science → This period was called The
Enlightenment
Important figures were:
- Robert Burns → Scottish poet who wrote Auld Lang Syne
- Adam Smith → Developed ideas about economics
- David Hume → A Philosopher
- James Watt → Worked on the development of Steam Power

THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION
- Britain was the first country to industrialize on a large scale due to steam power
and machinery
- Canals were built to link factories to cities and ports
- Richard Arkwright is remembered for his efficient and profitable work in
factories

COLONIZATION
- James Cook maps the coast of Australia and establishes colonies on the East Coat
- Sake Dean Mohamet opens the first curry house and his wife introduced shampooing
which was a form of head massage

THE SLAVE TRADE
- Quakers → The first formal anti slavery group
- William Willberforce → Important abolitionist
- Emancipation Act is established in 1833 which abolished slavery in the British empire
