In this assignment I’m going to describe the social implications of business ethics facing Shell in
its different areas of activity I’m then going to assess the social implications of business ethics
facing the business in its different areas of activity

Socialimplications

The effect of an activity on the social fabric of the community and well-being of the individuals and
families.

Ethics in Finance
Lobbying
A issue in Ethics in Finance is Lobbying, another form of corruption through the use of
money but this time it involves big investors getting the chance to meet with MP’s, PM’s or
Presidents. This is a huge concern with society today as it is now becoming more and more
popular for MP’s to be caught having private dinners or meetings with it high investors. This
is an issue because these high investors are after one thing, which is to convince in their
favor, the change of some laws and legislations or to gain information that would be
beneficial to them. This is a vital issue to deal with as it means that wealthy people will be
able to bride a member of parliament to adjust laws and legislations so that their business
will not need to give in certain information, bend the corners of certain laws and also have
unfair advantages over other businesses. Once again this is another concern with Shell
gaining power, because of the materials that Shell handles, it will be very dangerous to
employees and the public if Shell were to be skipping the use or practices of certain
legislations.

This affects society as it will be unfair to people who are less wealthy as they will always be the
underdogs when making decisions, so this can be seen as morally incorrect as it gives Shell the
greater advantage to be allowed to do whatever they want to do. The stakeholders that will be
affected by lobbying are competitors. Shell competitors will be underdogs as Shell would have
had legislations changed in their favor, but will cost their competitors a lot more money. In my
opinion this is unethical because if a law or legislation was to be adjusted or scraped it should
benefit all companies within that sector.
Lobbying does not only affect Shell because the unwanted expense of lobbying which is very
high but the company’s reputation would be at risk. If it is exposed that Shell owners were
having secret meetings with government officials then consumers would be fearful of what the
company wants in their favor, which could mean in less people using their products and
services as they might not like the laws and regulations
That Shell are trying to cheat into the system.
