1. Discuss some of the highlights of the airport certification process and their significance. The Federal Aviation Act authorizes FAA to issue a certification of airport for air carrier aircraft. The Airport and Airway Development of Act of 1970 was added in 1950’s Act. There is certain minimum safety standard required from any person who wants to operate the airport. In addition, FAA requires to meet standard of airport such as its design, runway, taxiway, record keeping and so on. In 2004, FAA issued more rules and it can be found at 14 CFR part 139, and airport is classified in four types; Class I though IV depends on type of air carrier operations. Class I airport must comply with part 139. The airport must have New Personnel training and hazardous material (HAZMAT) standards, Airport Emergency Plan, and New wild lift hazardous management plan standards. Class II airport must have scheduled operation of small air carrier aircraft between 10 to 30 seats and operation of unscheduled large air carrier aircraft more than 30 seats. HAZMAT, snow and ice control plan, Airport Emergency Plan are required. Class III airport must have only scheduled operation of small air carrier aircraft between 10 to 30 seats. Aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) and Airport Emergency Plan are required. Class IV airport must have only unscheduled operation over 30 seat large air carrier aircraft.
