how can I be a safe driver while operating my vehicle? being a safe driver means being aware of your surroundings. while operating your vehicle, always refer to foundation of safe driving, REPS. - Answer- 1. Recognize hazards- scan and communicate 2. eliminate distractions- keep your focus and see it all 3. plan ahead- expect the unexpected 4. seek space- eyes on path, know your limits 10 point commentary - Answer- 1. starting up at intersection - look left, right, and left 2. when stopped in traffic- when stopped in traffic, a car length of space is required from the vehicle ahead. this will allow enough space to pull your car around the vehicle ahead if it should stall and will give you an instant cushion if it should make a turn. 3. count 1-2-3 after vehicle ahead has started to move- this step is to be followed when stopped at an intersection behind another vehicle 4. 4-6 seconds following time for speeds under 30 mph 6-8 seconds for speeds over 30 mph- this is to keep you from getting a fixation on the car ahead and to allow time to obtain and hold the proper eye-lead time. 5. 8-15 seconds eyes-lead time- this is the best way to keep your eyes ahead of your wheels and is the depth at which your eyes should be focused most of the time 6. scan steering wheels- look and see whether or not cars at the curb are occupied. this is the only time they are a threat. if they are occupied the driver is probably about to exit from the car or pull out from the curb 7. stale green lights- the point of decision is an imaginary line that you set up between your vehicle and the crosswalk when you are approaching an intersection with a stale green light. since you are not sure of the light, you must be sure of the point behind which you will stop if the light should start to change. this helps you get the big picture. 8. eyes contact- when you must depend on anyone along the edge of your driving path to stay put until you are past the danger point, it is imperative that you get their attention. the horn and lights are your communication tools where you do not have eye contact. only when you have eye contact can you expect the other person to act in a reasonably predictable manner to avoid a dangerous situation 9. when pulling from curb- glance over left shoulder when pulling from the curb 10. use of mirror- as rule of thumb, once every five to eight five to eight seconds when do i use the mentor application and how can i have a safe driving score (FICO)? all drivers, departments of transportation(DOT) and non-DOT delivery associates, must use the mentor application. mentor measures your safe driving habits. it is mandatory to keep the application running throughout your entire shift. - Answer- specifically, mentor measure the following: 1. acceleration is <9MPH/second (0-30MPH count to 3) 2. braking: hard braking is more than 9 MPH/ second (30-0MPH count to 3) 3. cornering: do not take turns >20MPH 4. distractions: do NOT log in on your personal phone while operating the vehicle 5. speeding: going above the posted speed limit the safest tip for maintaining a good mentor score is to never touch your device while driving, wear your seat belt, and always drive at the posted speed limit. if you drive at the speed limit, it greatly reduces the chances of harsh cornering, hard braking, and quick acceleration. how do i safely drive into my site at the start of my shift? most sites will require you to drive inside of a station to load your vehicle at the start of shift. driving in a station has different safety rules and regulation than driving on the road. - Answer- when driving in a station: 1. honk your horn when approaching the driver lanes 2. drive at the speed limit of 5mph (both inside the station and in the parking lot) 3. turn your headlight and hazard lights on 4. put your windows down 5. turn off all music - headphones are not permitted at any time 6. turn your engine off once you are parked in the station- do not idle 7. honk your turn when entering the station, starting up your vehicle again, and exiting the station 8. exit the station only when the yard Marshall permits you- you must exit in waves and cannot exit as soon as you are finished loading your vehicle how do i start my shift using the rabbit application? - Answer- 1. open the rabbit application 2. select "sign in with amazon' (orange button) 3. enter your email address and password that was created during training (you should have written it on your access card) 4. enter your vans mileage and select "go on duty" 5. do not "swipe to finish" - doing so will prevent you from scanning packages at the station 6. select "scan packages" (grey button) to se the staging location for your route 7. identify your stage/pick carts for your route, bring them to your vehicle, and begin scanning how do I start my shift using the rabbit application? - Answer- 1. open the rabbit application 2. select "sign in with amazon" (orange) 3. enter your email address and password that was created during training (you should have written it on your access card) 4. enter your van's mileage and select "go on duty" 5. do NOT "swipe to finish" - doing so will prevent you from scanning package at the station 6. select "scan packages" (grey button) to see the staging location for your route 7. identify your stage/pick carts for your route, bring them to your vehicle, and begin scanning how do I find my staged route once I am in the station? - Answer- 1. on the rabbit, select "scan packages". the next screen will show you where your package are located; this will appear in the left column of the screen below the camera view. 2. each route has its own staging location inside one of three zones - A, B and C each zone has up to 60 route staging locations (example: B19). each staging location can hold up to 3 carts. 3. route can have 1 to 5 carts. be sure to grab every cart for your route. if you cannot find your route or are missing a cart, ask an amazon associate for assistance how do I load my vehicle? - Answer- 1. the rabbit will show you which order your bags will be delivered while on your route. use this order as a guide to identify where/how bags should be loaded in your vehicle. 2. amazon uses 5 different colored bags with 3-digit numbers. bag colors are displayed in code on your rabbit. 1. YLO = yellow 2. NVY = Blue 3. BLK = Black 4. ORG = orange 5. GRN = green 2. loading method for vehicles with shelves the order of bags on your staging carts reflects your delivery sequence (refer to the image on the right) 3. you can verify that you correctly loaded the vehicle if your first bag to delivery is directly behind the drivers seat on the top shelf and your sixth bag is directly behind the drivers seat on the bottom shelf. excess bags and oversized (OV) packages should be stowed on the passenger side with lighter boxes on top shelf. anything too large to fit on the shelf should be securely stored in the center of the aisle. load the vehicle with the last bag stacked behind the driver's seat. stack and securely place the bags in descending order until the last bag loaded is your first bag to deliver (should be placed directly in front of the side door) all oversized (OV) boxes should be loaded in the back of the vehicle, with your first stop the closest to the rear door. remember, you want to prevent searching for the correct bag while delivering your route you should always have the next stop easily available to you. loading correctly will save you time what is "scan to verify" and how do i make sure i am scanning my entire route? - Answer- everything bag and over sized (OV) package must be scanned. on the rabbit's will keep track of how many items you have scanned on the camera screen. for example, for example it will star, 43 of 211 package scanned. if you physically scanned everything from your staging location and are still missing packages, ask an amazon associate for assistance. never try to solve the problem by "swipe to finish" - it will delay the customer from receiving their package on time how long do I have to load my vehicle? - Answer- 1. during load out, each wave of vehicles has 20 minutes to identify, scan and load each bag/package into the vehicle. the 20-minute time starts when your wave begins and ends when you leave the stations geofence (the digital location). you cannot leave the station if you finish loading your vehicle early. you must wait for the yard Marshall to dispatch your entire wave as a group. 2. correctly sort and organize your vehicle according to the rabbit during loadout. you are not allowed extra time to stop and reorganize your vehicle after you leave the station. if you need to make any last minute adjustments to your load, please wait until you get to your first stop. if my bags are not of order, how do i know which bag a package is in? - Answer- the rabbit will identify which bag a package belongs to. each bag has a code that states the number and color of a bag (refer to picture on the right) in this example, the package is in a blue bag numbered 618. how should i mark a package? you have to mark how you delivered a package in the rabbit application so the customer and amazon knows how and when the package was delivered. - Answer- 1. you can choose the package was delivered was delivered. 2. customer or household member: used when you hand the package with an authorized third party member of their household 3. receptionist or doorman: used when you leave the package with an authorized third party member to accept the packages for the customer 4. secure mailroom: used when a package is left in a secure mailroom for the customer to pick up 5. front door/front porch: used when a package is left in a secure location on the customers front porch 6. back door/back porch: used when a package is left in a secure location on the customers back porch 7. another secure location: used when a package is left in a secure location that does not fall into not fall into any other category (e.g. garage, side door, bin for delivered packages) what do i do if i am unable to deliver a package? - Answer- make sure you follow the 3Cs to troubleshooting (call the customer, call driver support and call dispatch) before marking a package as undeliverable. you should try to exhaust all resources before not meeting customer promise. if you still cannot complete the delivery after exhausting your resources, you can mark the package as "unable to deliver"
