ACTIVITY 1
1.1 Briefly explain the following concepts using your own understanding after
reading what literature says about them:
1.1.1 The Environment (2)
is a natural unit consisting of all plants, animals and micro-organisms (biotic factors)
in an area functioning together with all of the non-living physical (abiotic) factors of
the environment.
1.1.2 Environmental Education (2)
Environmental education is the process of recognizing values and clarifying concepts
in order to develop skills and attitudes necessary to understand and appreciate the
interrelatedness among man, his culture and his biophysical surroundings [sic].
Environmental education also entails practice in decisionmaking and self-formulation
of a code of behaviour about issues concerning environmental quality (IUCN, 1971:
17)
1.1.3 The Anthropocene (2)
The Anthropocene is the name used to refer to the era in which humankind has
become a geological force. It is the Age of Humans, with impacts of global
proportions. Since the beginning of the 17th century, humankind has altered the
Earth’s systems on a geological scale. The key drivers are human population growth,
economic growth, war, pollution and environmental degradation. The effects of the
Anthropocene include such global environmental crises as biodiversity loss,
introduction and spread of alien invasive species, and species extinction;
environmental degradation, deforestation and desertification; water, air and land
pollution; health hazards; and climate change.
1.1.4 Sustainability (2)
Sustainability is a societal goal that relates to the ability of people to safely co-exist
on Earth over a long time. Specific definitions of this term are difficult to agree on
and have varied with literature, context, and time. Sustainability is commonly
described as having three dimensions (or pillars): environmental, economic, and
social. Many publications state that the environmental dimension is the most

, important. For this reason, in everyday use, sustainability is often focused on
countering major environmental problems, such as climate change, loss of
biodiversity, loss of ecosystem services, land degradation, and air and water
pollution. The concept of sustainability can be used to guide decisions at the global,
national, and individual levels (e.g. sustainable living).
1.1.5 The Holistic Environment (2)
With the acknowledgement of humankind as an integral part of the environment, the
conception of the environment has shifted from an emphasis purely on the
biophysical elements (living organisms, air, land and water) of the environment to the
inclusion of human aspects as part of the broader environment. As a result, a holistic
concept of the environment that embraces the totality of our lived environment –
human (constructed, social, cultural, economic and political), natural (biophysical),
spatial (geographic context) and temporal (timespan (see Smyth, 2006).

2.1 Mention five NGO principles of environmental education and discuss how
you can apply them in teaching an environmental education topic of your
choice. (10)

teaches children about waste and how
to remove it to benefit the environment.
2. Examine major environmental issues Showing the children videos and
from local, national, regional, and images of dumpsites and littering on
international points of view so that beaches can broaden the children’s
students receive insights into understanding of the importance of this
environmental conditions in other topic. Such a small concept can make
geographical areas. such a big difference.
3. Promote the value and necessity of Showing the learners videos and
local, national, and international images of people coming together all
cooperation in prevention and solution over the world that are enforcing this
of environmental problems topic on their own lifestyles and
communities and what a positive impact
