Im writing to you today to express a deep concern of mine about a current and urgent
interantional probelm which many people around the world are affected by. As a canadian
citizen I believe that it is our right and moreover our responsibility to take action and help those
in need, as in the case with the ongoing global climate crisis and the urgent need for Canada to
take a decisive and bold action to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and mitgate our carbon
foot print.
As I'm sure you are aware global warming is a prevelant issue and one of the greatest challenegs
we as humanity have to face. Climate change is the root cause of rising sea levels, the increase in
the frequency of heat waves, droughts, floods, and other severe and extreme weather phenomena.
These impacts are devastating and affect many in the global community, but they also pose a
significant threat to our economy, security, and wayof life here in Canada.
It is no secret that climate change is primarily casued by human activities , in particular burning
fossil fuels like coal, gas, and oil. We cannot sustain this way of life and even if we could it
would lead to the subsequent destruction of our world. The earth has been heavily damaged by
the recklessness of humans and through our constant pollution we have caused irreversable
damage to our planet. To avoid any further impacts of climate change a solution which has been
heavily pruposed is to transition into a low-carbon economy.
As a country we have already made progress in this field and have reduced our green house gas
emissions year after year, in saying this we still do have a long way to go before we are “carbon
neutral”. According to the latest data from Enviornment Canada our green house gas emission
lowered by a whopping, staggering, enormous 1 percent since 2005, despite all of our new and
so called effective policies and legislation regarding this issue. This is not enough, its laughable
that we are a leading country in todays global political climate and yet we are not predicted to be
the first to achive carbon neutrality or even be mentioned as among the first to think of starting to
work towards it.
I truly urge and plead with you to take immediate action and address the climate crisis, some
ways this can be done are:
1) Setting ambitious and at the same time attainable greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Canada needs to set targets for reducing our emission by aligning them with the latest
scientific guide lines. We must strive for net zero emissions by the year 2050, setting
interim targets and making sure they are legally binding and enforceable are crucial to
ensure accountability and transparency between all levels of governments and civilians.
To ensure that these arent just empty promises its crucial to make them this way, this
allows us to set a goal and stay on track by implementing strict rules and regulations for
all business’s,people, and government.
2) Implementing and achieving. Its simply not enough to set a goal we must actively pursue
it; we need policies which will help guide us and keep us on the right path to achieve the
status of carbon neutral by 2050. These mesures include pricing carbon pollutions,
investing in clean enrgy,and improving energy efficiency. Also we need to make sure
