A licensed Registered Nurse who carries an advanced degree in anesthesia. What is the degree you must have before applying to Anesthesia school? How much experience as a nurse do you need before applying to Anesthesia School? You need a minimum of one year experience in Critical Care setting or emergency room in a level one trauma center. However, two to three years or more is preferred. How competitive are the programs? You must have a GPA of 3.1-3.3 or higher to be considered. A strong background in science and math. Most colleges have very small classes. 6-12 student class sizes. There are three colleges in the twin cities and one college in Rochester, MN. Will my credits from Century College transfer? Yes, most credits will transfer, however, the science classes must be at an upper division to transfer. This means at a baccalaureate level in sciences and math. What type of degree will I obtain upon graduation? Depending on the school attending, a Master's degree or Doctorate degree in Anesthesia. How long is the Anesthesia program? The program is 27-36 months long, year round, full-time. No exceptions in any of the schools. How do I improve my chances of being accepted into the program? Assess and improve on your math and science GPA and become certified in your specialty, such as Critical Care. Also taking additional science coursework beyond what is required for your nursing degree beyond junior/community college. Will I get a job after graduation? Most schools report 100% of graduates are working in the field of anesthesia. What is anesthesia? Defined by the role of the Nurse Anesthetist? Anesthesia is defined as a loss of sensation that makes a person insensible to pain with or without loss of consciousness. Reversible loss of consciousness and sensation accompanied by sufficient muscle relaxation and analgesia to allow surgery to be performed without pain or movement by the patient What is the role of a nurse anesthetist? To provide a wide range of anesthesia and pain management. Where does a CRNA practice? Every setting where anesthesia is provided or needed: traditional hospital surgical suites; ambulatory surgical settings; obstetrical settings; critical care; specialized clinical settings such as; podiatry; dental; plastic surgery centers; and pain clinics. The U.S Military and Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare Facilities. Does the CNRA need an anesthesiologist to administer anesthesia? CRNAs can work alone, or in collaboration with an anesthesiologist. Depending on institutional policies and location of facilities. In rural areas it is common that a CRNA is in practice without the Anesthesiologist. Is it safe for a CRNA to provide anesthesia without the Anesthesiologist present? When anesthesia is administered by a Nurse it is considered just as safe. There is no difference in safety whether administered by a Nurse Anesthetist or Anesthesiologist.
