Chapter 7
MICROBIAL GROWTH
Nutritional requirements
, Microbial Growth
Refers to the increase in number of cells.
Why is the knowledge about microbial nutrition
important?
To prevent the growth of disease caused by
microbes.
To prevent spoilage microbes from contaminating
food.
To encourage the growth of helpful microbes.
To have thorough knowledge of their nutrition
demands
2
, Nutritional requirements for growth
Nutrients: organic/inorganic substances used in biosynthesis
(production of molecules in a living organism) and provide
energy.
Decomposition of organic matter containing lipids,
carbohydrates, proteins (why decomposition?).
For the absorption of simple forms produced through
decomposing lipids, carbohydrates and proteins.
Nutrients then pass through cytoplasmic membrane into the
cell.
Nutrients necessary to synthesize protoplasm and other
cell components (organelles).
Supply energy for life processes.
