,Question 1
Those leading change in organisations need to make key decisions around the
way in which the change process will be managed. John Kotter developed one
approach to manage change in an organisation.
Apply the change model of John Kotter to the change process focused on
safety that was initiated and lead by Ms Cynthia Carroll as CEO of Anglo-
American plc for the period 2007 to 2013. In your answer, you need to
explain each step of Kotter’s model and then explain the application
thereof to the case study.
According to Kotter (1996), there is an eight-step model for leading
change in an organization, which is as follows:
1. Establish a sense of urgency. According to Kotter (1996), leaders
must foster a sense of urgency surrounding the need for change by
highlighting the potential consequences of not changing. This is a
crucial step in ensuring the successful implementation of strategy,
as employees need to understand that maintaining the status quo
poses a threat to the organization's continued success.
2. Create a guiding coalition. The formation of a "guiding coalition" is
crucial for driving change within the organization. This group
should consist of individuals with the necessary knowledge, skills,
and attitudes to lead the change effort, and their role includes
creating and executing a roadmap for change. To be effective, the
coalition should be a diverse mix of individuals who complement
each other.
3. Develop a vision and strategy. Developing a change vision is crucial
to create a compelling and unifying image of the desired future
state of the organization. This vision should effectively
communicate the need for change and the aspirations of the
organization, and should have several key characteristics: providing
a clear, appealing view of the future; appealing to the long-term
interests of stakeholders; being feasible, with realistic and
attainable goals; and being focused and clear enough to guide
decision making.
