How can be science be biased?
- If we start questioning the objectivity of science we then also question the science
- Science should not supposed to be influenced outside of the facts that we are trying to
understand
- We think that science has some truth to it
- There are many ways that the scientific method are susceptible to bias
- Examples:
- If the questions you asked is biased then everything else can lead to a
bias outcome and would have a domino effect
- If you also repeat the same experiment with the same conditions then you
are expecting the same results but in reality you will never get the same
results
- Analyzation is biased because you are forced to make an analysis to your
experiment
- Hypothesis can also be susceptible to bias such that you might frame
your question bases on your understanding of the world as well as you
past experiences
Scientific objectivity
- There are three components to scientific objectivity
1. Faithfulness to facts
a. Everyone who looks at these data would end up to the same conclusion
b. Making a conclusion bases on facts
c. Your interpretation of the facts are not necessarily objective
2. Freedom from external values and normative assumptions
a. Our claim being able to justify facts to the world makes science the way it is
b. The first reading is about ideological corruption
i. Corruption of science by ideology
ii. Believes the objectivity on the process that we have built
c. The second reading is about ideological awareness
i. These things were always there but only the reawakening that has never
been there before
ii. It is possible that bias can make into the scientific method
d. We built on whatever that was based on the past
3. Absence of personal bias
