Instructions
Lab Instructions
Purposes - i.e. Learning Goals: You will gain preliminary experience identifying rocks and fossils - and their
ages - using photos and videos of specimens and fact-sheets describing the organisms encountered in the
given geological section.

Characterize the living environments of organisms based on the morphology of their fossils and the
corresponding rocks.
Estimate age ranges for each specimen.
Use fossil specimens age ranges to interpret ages of zones of the geologic section.
Estimate how much time is MISSING at an unconformity in the geologic section.

Context
A hypothetical geologic section exposed in a quarry is given in Figure Lab 1-1 on the Resources page.
Locations of 12 rock or fossil specimens found in this section are shown (Labeled sp.1- sp.9 and R1). Also,
locations of two different types of unconformity are identified with labels S1 and S2.

First you will answer a quiz-like sequence of questions about the specimens, their context and living settings,
and the rocks or other features in the section. This portion of the lab can be visited and revisited as often as
you like before the due date.

You will also graphically solve an age-range problem that answers the question "how much time is missing at
the feature labelled S2 in Figure Lab1-1." You will submit your own response to this problem and then discuss
results within your small groups and submit a new solution for that problem that is agreed upon by the whole
group. (Make sure you keep a copy of your Individual Sketch on your computer as you will need it again for
the Group Portion of this lab.)

Lab 1 Instructions
Individual Portion
1. Start by working through the "quiz-based" exercise called "Lab 1 Part 1, Question set on relative dating

using rocks and fossils", using the resources provided. You may need to search the internet to answer
a few of the questions.
2. SIMULTANEOUSLY, WHILE ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS, make a sketch to indicate the age
ranges for the fossils encountered in those questions. Instructions for how to create the sketch are
provided in the sketch link in the file below. YOU MUST save your final age-range results as per the
instructions provided in the appropriate file below.
3. When your sketch is completed and saved, upload it to Canvas for grading - again following directions
given in the appropriate file below to accomplish this.

Group Portion
After the deadline for submitting Lab 1 Part 1, you will have a few days to complete Lab 1 Part 2: (Group
portion). You will post your Sketch from Part 1 to the group discussion board, discuss within your group to
agree on a whole-group version of this age range sketch, and submit a group version of the sketch. "Submit a
group version" simply means that the last post for this group discussion must have the title "Final Group
Version" and it should contain the figure labelled with your group name. We will use that final version for the
group grade.

Please start early or you will run out of time for this conversation. Frequent interactions and discussions with
everyone in the group are strongly encouraged! (Note: You will not receive any marks for the group portion of
the lab if you sign on too late and miss the group conversation that occurred for the group to reach their final
sketch submission. You will be too late and will receive a score of '0' for this part of the lab. So, log on within
the first 24 hours of the group portion to make sure you are involved before you are too late!)
