Pro-kinetic drugs:
These receptors can be targeted to increase gut motility.
Emetics:
Ipecacuanha
o Active substances are alkaloids emetine and cephaline
o Irritant to the stomach lining
Apomorphine
o D2 dopamine agonist, which acts centrally in the CTZ
Diarrhoea:
If you have if lots of water remains in the intestinal lumen bicarbonate
follows. So if you have diarrhoea loss of bicarbonate can lead to acidosis.
Can be caused by: infection, toxins, chronic inflammation, and dietary
imbalance.
Principle of treating diarrhoea:
o Symptomatic – correct fluid balance and electrolyte loss and food
withdrawal
o Antibiotics
o Absorbents – e.g. charcoal which is thought to absorb bacteria and
toxins but effectiveness is doubtful.
