, Structure of action research proposal
1) Title:
South African Schools are faced with increased physical and psychological violence.
2) Introduction:
The intention of this research proposal is to investigate the increased physical and
psychological violence educators and students are faced with in South Africa.
Psychological impact is not easily seen. School violence that is not physical in nature,
but that may involve bullying or cyberbullying, that can leave deep scars. Leaners and
educators who are bullied often develop anxiety illness, depression, traumatic stress
and may lead to using drugs or alcohol to numb the pain. One of the worst effects of
school violence, is school shootings that could involve death. Other physical effects
can range from small scrapes and cuts, to developing insomnia, to severe and
debilitating injuries that puts students and educators in hospital.
The safety of learners and educators are no longer guaranteed in schools (Bucher &
Manning, 2003). These occurrences of school violence, not only harm innocent
bystanders but disrupt the curriculum. Therefore, infringing on the right students have
to education. When a fight breaks out in class, it is impossible for the educator to
continue with his or her lesson. All the attention goes to the learners who are involved
in the fight. Innocent learners can not receive any teaching in that time period and
even when the educator finally gets to continue, the rest of the class has lost all
concentration. Sometimes school violence is so severe that learners have to be sent
home. One could thus argue that school violence effects teaching in a negative way
(Ncontsa & Shumba, 2013).
Investigating school violence is important as we could gain a much more deeper
understanding to what causes these increased physical and psychological violence
against educators and learners. By having some insight of the causes of the latter, it
makes one more capable to handle or deal with such cases of school violence, by
implementing strategies.
