, ENG1517 Exam 2022
Question 1
1.1 Zeus and Prometheus are gods that take central action in this story; the actions of gods
and goddesses are a characteristic of mythology (Tutorial Letter 501, 2022:63). This story
also reflects the heroic deed performed by Prometheus to help the humankind by giving them
fire and in mythology supernatural beings endure dangerous journeys and perform heroic
deeds for the service of humanity (Tutorial letter 501, 2022:59). The function of myths is to
help the humankind answer questions about the existence of the world (Tutorial letter 501,
2022:60) and in this story we see how the fire element came into existence. This story also
shows us the powerful gods that rule different worlds and myths add a spiritual dimension to
our lives by teaching us about gods (Tutorial letter 501, 2022:60).
1.2 To enhance the students’ learning by incorporating multimodal methods, I would use
pictures demonstrating an event from the story to engage their visual senses. For example, a
picture of Zeus chaining Prometheus to a rock will allow learners to examine the emotion of
the characters. To incorporate sound in the lesson, I would play a recording of the story that
engages them through the auditory sense. The learners will be able to hear the anger in Zeus’s
voice by observing his tone. To provide a tactile experience of aspects of the story, I would
provide physical objects for the children to experience texture through touch that represent
objects from the story, such as a lightning bolt prop, a chain and rock.
Question 2
2.1 The visuals in image 1 extend the meaning of the text because the character is referring to
the cold water and the picture shows it is a hot day. The visual gives us further information
about the weather and without the text we could assume they are running because of the hot
sand and not the cold water. The relationship between the image and text provides a different
viewpoint (Joubert et al, 2017:79). It creates a humorous effect because instead of cooling off
in the water on a hot day they are running away.
2.2 The visuals in image 2 contradict the meaning of the text because the picture clearly
shows the meerkat waving at Peo whereas Bonke does not even look and says it is
impossible. The relationship between the image and text is opposing because the visuals
modify the text. It creates a humorous effect because Bonke does not believe Peo even
though the meerkat is waving. Bonke is unaware of what is going on behind him which
contradicts the text.
