Describe how speed can be measured in a school laboratory.
Measure the mass of the trolley, the unit masses and the hanging hook. Measure the length of the
piece of card that will interrupt the light gate beams. Adjust the height of the ramp until the trolley
just starts to move. Attach the trolley to the hanging mass by the string. Move the trolley down the
ramp. Each light gate will record the time that the trolley passes through and the speed of the trolley
at the time. The acceleration can then be calculated. Add a mass from the hanging mass to the
trolley and repeat the experiment.
