In the relation of the use of proactive and reactive strategies, it is of great importance to identify
patterns of behaviour or triggers when deciding to use the strategies. But why is it important to
identify patterns of behaviour and triggers when deciding to use proactive or reaction strategies
when being faced with challenging behaviours? Well, I will explain below.

The importance of identifying patterns of behaviours or triggers when deciding to use proactive or
reactive strategies when faced with behaviours that challenge

It is of great importance to identify patterns of behaviour and behaviour triggers when deciding to
use proactive or reactive strategies when faced with challenging behaviour for numerous reasons.
Precursor behaviours, or behaviours that occur before challenging behaviour include tense muscles,
pacing, sweating, facial expressions and increased breathing rate. It is important to identify such
precursor behaviours and patterns of behaviour leading up to events of challenging behaviour, so
the correct and most effective proactive and reactive strategies can be established. If such
precursors and patterns of behaviours are not identified when deciding to use proactive or reactive
strategies, how can the most effective and correct proactive and reactive strategies be implemented
and used effectively?

But with that being said, what patterns of behaviour and triggers are there and how can they be
identified? Firstly, to clarify a pattern is repetitive like wallpaper, a repetitive type of challenging
behaviour is a type of challenging behaviour that is seen continuously, whether it be hitting another
student or swearing at a member of staff. Continuing, Patterns and triggers of behaviour vary from
individual to individual, a person only behaves a certain way with a certain individual in the room or
maybe an individual displays a particular behaviour without a certain individual in the room,
everyone’s different. But common precursors include sweating and facial expressions. Facial
expressions and sweating could mean an individual is getting angry and possibly escalate to
challenging behaviour. Different from precursors of behaviour, in other words, signs of possible
challenging behaviour, triggers are what cause behaviour to worsen or escalate in the first place. A
trigger could be anything, maybe a child gets hit by another student or maybe a child gets shouted
at, both of which are triggers and both can lead to events of challenging behaviour.

Changes in behaviour can be recognized and factors must be considered when looking into such
changes and the cause behind the changes. Factors that could lead to mood changes and challenging
behaviour could include lack of choice, boredom, antagonism, lack of communication, frustration,
physical illness, or emotional confusion or upset. Changes, patterns and triggers can be recognized
through general observation, recording of records, and effective communication with other
members of staff. With patterns and triggers explained and identified what must be done after the
identification of them?
