Unit 5
P6- Follow guidelines to collect data for heart rate, breathing rate and temperature before and
after a standard period of exercise

For the P6 task, we carried out exercise for 15 minutes. Before exercise, we measured our breathing
rate at rest, pulse rate at rest and temperature at rest. After, we then measured the previous
variables again immediately after exercising to see the change in results. Lastly, we then measured
the variables again 5 minutes after to see if the results had changed any further. The purpose of this
task was to demonstrate how homeostasis occurs in the body. Below is a graph of my breathing rate,
pulse rate and temperature before and after exercise. I will interpret the data and discuss what
happened.

How I measured my breathing rate safely

To measure my breathing rate safely I started by washing my hands before the procedure to prevent
infection risk. I then positioned myself in front of a clock ready to count my breathing rate. To
measure my breathing rate I counted the number of breaths for an entire minute.

How I measured my pulse rate safely

To measure my pulse rate safely I started by washing my hands before measuring to prevent
infection. To find my pulse in my wrist I firstly, I held my hand out with my palm facing upwards.
Secondly, with my other hand I pressed my index finger and middle finger on the inside of my wrist
however, I made sure I didn’t use my thumb because it has its own pulse. I then, pressed firmly on
my wrist to find my pulse once I found my pulse I counted the number of beats in a minute to
measure my heart rate.

How I measured my temperature safely

To measure my temperature, I used a forehead thermometer. To keep safe from infection I started
by cleaning the strip in case it was used previously. I then, made sure the strip was clean and dry.
After that, I held the thermometer firmly at both ends and pressed the strip flat against the middle
of my forehead. I held the strip in place for 15 seconds, I then asked my peer to read the forehead
thermometer to measure my temperature.

, Average breathing rate

Respiratory rates change based on many health and activity factors. The normal respiratory rate also
differs in adults and children. The respiratory rate is the number of breaths someone takes every
minute. When a person inhales oxygen enters their lungs and travels to organs. When they exhale,
carbon dioxide leaves the body. I will now talk about the average respiratory rates by age.

Respiratory rates by age

Birth to 6 weeks: 30-40 breaths per minute

6 months old: 25-40 breaths per minute

3 years old: 20-30 breaths per minute

6 years old: 18-25 breaths per minute

10 years: 17-23 breaths per minute

Adults: 12-18 breaths per minute

65 years old: 12-28 breaths per minute

80 years old: 10-30 breaths per minute

Average pulse rate

Heart rate, also known as pulse, is the number of times a person’s heartbeats per minute. The
normal heart rate varies from person to person. A heart rate depends on factors including the
individual, age, body size, heart conditions, medication use and whether the person is sitting or
moving. I will now talk about average heart rates by age.

Pulse rate by age

1-5 years: 80-120 beats per minute

5-10 years: 75-110 beats per minute

20 years: 200 beats per minute

30 years: 190 beats per minute

40 years: 180 beats per minute

50 years: 170 beats per minute

60 years: 160 beats per minute

70 years: 150 beats per minute
