,Lecture 1
ICT = information and communication technology

 Technology that gives information and communication between people and machines

Processes in education
 Different perspectives:
o Front (example: teacher with PowerPoint) VS. peer-to-peer (students are
connected) technology
o Bound to school VS. not bound to school
 Some technology is made for school, but not all.
o Formal (example: official mail) VS. informal (example: Twitter)
o Stand-alone VS. networked
 Connection
 Different processes:
o For organizational processes
 Organization of learning
 Blended/flipped/distance learning, MOOCs
o For learning processes
 Help students better understand learning content
 Multimedia, games, stimulations
o For supportive processes
 Can help teachers or students (to better organize education)
 Learning analytics, adaptive testing, social media

TPACK-model: a framework of skills and knowledge to effectively
integrate ICT in your lessons.
 4 dimensions:
o Technology: technology supporting the content/
pedagogy
o Pedagogy: the didactics belonging to that subject (how
to tech)
o Content: the content of the subject that you teach (what
to teach)
o Knowledge: content knowledge (vakinhoud),
pedagogical knowledge (didactiek) en technological
knowledge (ict).
 Interaction between dimensions
o TPK: how teaching and learning can change when
particular technology is used
(how didactics changes through ICT)
 Adaptive learning: faster and more sophisticated
o TCK: how content changes through ICT (example: physics and math)
 Simulation
 Visualize the unobservable
 Metaphors
o PCK: specific didactics requires to mould the subject and adapt it for instruction

2

,  Personal curriculum based on ability
 Combine all  TPACK: guide your thinking when you want to use ICT in education (relevant,
related, support of decisions)

The media debate
 Clark VS. Kozma
o Does medium (how information is presented) matter?
o ICT application (new media) change:
 The organization of education
 The learning processes
 The motivation of students
o Essentially or not?
 Clark VS. Kozma

Clark: Kozma:
Media have no essential effect on Media have an essential effect on
learning (example: no difference learning
between book or video).
Instructional methods are responsible Media and instructional methods are
for knowledge gains inseparable (constructivists view)
(example: biology and body  you can
zoom in and out)
No one media attribute has an unique Specific attributes have unique cognitive
cognitive effect effects
Pre- and posttests are sufficient
Method and medium should NOT be Method and medium should be mixed
confounded
Learning effect can be released by any
medium (time maybe differ)
Media can have effect on motivation
and efficiency
Process should also be involved
