In this piece of my coursework, I am going to be explaining more about how all of the strategies I
talked about on L03 can ensure a person-centred approach with 2 case studies I have devised. I am
going to be taking half of the strategies and talk about how they would apply in a dentistry and take
the other half of the strategies and talk about how they would apply when you are a supporting
independent living worker.
Dentistry
For my first case study I am going to be talking about 55-year-old women named Priya. Priya was in a
car accident 2-years-ago and is now paralysed from the waist down. Priya has to use a wheel chair to
move around. Priya went for a check-up at the dentist a week ago and has been told that she needs
to have 2 fillings. The dentist has told Priya that she needs to come in for an appointment to have
the procedure. Priya is a Muslim which means that she has some beliefs that need to be taken into
account when she is visiting the dentist to prevent discrimination and promote good practice. Priya
is nervous about getting fillings because she is worried about how painful the dental surgery will be.
All of the staff at the dentistry should ensure they are always promoting care values with every
person that uses the service. Promotion of care values is important because it allows people to have
the best care possible, be treated the same as everyone else and prevents them from discrimination.
Before you have your appointment with Priya you need to look at her beliefs, needs and abilities so
you have the right staff and the right things in place when she is visiting the dentist. The staff should
ensure that there is enough space for Priya to move around the building in her wheel chair. Priya is a
Muslim so she is only allowed to have the dental procedure done by a female doctor. The staff
should ensure that a female doctor is available for her scheduled appointment and when she
booked her appointment the receptionist should of only shown her the available slots with the
female dentist to prevent Priya having to cancel her appointment which will cause a confusion as
Priya had to arrange for her husband to pick her up and drop her off. Her husband booked off a
whole day for this so having to cancel and rescheduled for another day will mean her husband will
have to book of another day from work. This would be positive for Priya because it will allow her
confidence to grow and help her feel more confident and comfortable using services with her wheel
chair. By doing this she would feel valued, raise her self-esteem and confidence. This is crucial in
building positive relationships because promoting care values prevents discrimination and promotes
good practice which will help Priya be more comfortable using a service. Feeling comfortable around
people can build a positive relationship as it will help them to communicate effectively with you
which is a main part of a relationship.
After Priya has had her filling done at the dentistry, the dentist should use reflective practice to look
back at what she did picking out what she think she did well and what she could do next time to
improve. The dentist should go over things such as: how she spoke to Priya? Was she patient with
her? Did she take into account all of her abilities, rights and wishes? Etc. The dentist should go over
these factors and pick out which ones she thinks she did well and which ones she could practice
better next time. The dentist has picked out a few things that she thought went well: the dentist
spoke to Priya in a formal but friendly manner, she was patient with her whilst she was getting into
the chair, she was constantly reassuring Priya that the dental surgery won't hurt and she had a
conversation with Priya whilst she was getting ready for the surgery to try and take her mind off it.
The dentist also picked out a few things that she thought she didn’t do too well: she forgot to move
