,OPM 1501 Assignment 2 V v.d Westhuizen 11665890 Unique number 758503 2
PART A
1. Name the three verbs used in doing mathematics with example.
• "To simplify" means to reduce an expression into fewer terms or into a form that is easier
to work with.
• For example,
37 - [5 + {28 - (19 - 7)}]
= 37 - [5 + {28 - 12}] [Removing the innermost bracket ( )]
= 37 - [5 + 16] [Removing braces { }]
= 37 - 21
= 16
• "To evaluate" an algebraic expression means to find the values of the expression when
the variable is replaced with a given number.
• For example,
Evaluate the cost of each pie when 3 pies cost $6.
= $2 each
• "To factor", or factoring, means to break an expression down into its factors.
• For example,
The numbers 2 and 3 are factors of 6 because
=2x3=6
2. Determine if rounding off 34, 56 to the nearest one decimal place is a nonroutine or
a routine question. Work out the answer.
It is a nonroutine question because there was no question asked.
The answer can be given by showing the children “The roller coaster” method
• Numbers from 1-4 fall back to 0
• Numbers 5-9 Go over the bump and become bigger
- 34 is rounder of as » 30
- 56 is rounded of as » 60
- 34 + 56 = 90 and 30 + 60 = 90 so no matter if the numbers are rounded off or not the
answer stays the same.

3. Define the number and numeral. Provide an example for each.
• Number: an arithmetical value, an idea that quantifies, counts, ranks or calculates an
arithmetical value. For example: 3,4.
• Numeral: a symbol that is used to indicate a number. For example: three, four.
4. Draw Dienes block to show how to find the solution to:
5. Test the following numbers for divisibility by 6, 9, and 11. (Do not divide or factorise)
a) 6 798 340 is divisible by 6: ................................................................................. ...
6 + 7 + 9 + 8 + 3 + 4 + 0 = 37 and 3 + 7 = 10 (can be divided into 2 and 3) therefore 6 798
340 is divisible by 6.
