1. “Deindividuation variables on stealing among Halloween Trick-or-Treaters”
a. Variables: anonymity vs. nonanonymity, alone vs. group, and groups
with/without a child made responsible for the gorup actions.
b. Zimbardo (1969) suggested that deindividuation could be heightened due to
internal conditions such as autonomic arousal, and a subjective feeling of
diffused responsibility for group acts.
c. Results:
i. Parent present: 8.3% of transgressions
ii. Alone + anonymous: 14% increase of transgressions
iii. Groups + anonymous: 36% increase of transgressions
1. anonymity had a stronger effect on groups, inplying that it fostered
deindividuation (though it remains as just a hypothesis)
iv. “Leader” only anonymous: 27.3% of transgressions
