Introduction
In this assignment I’ll assess and justify recommendation on how Barking and
Dagenham may change and improve their motivational techniques. Beside this I
will suggest which motivation theorist has influenced my decisions. Motivation
plays a huge part at Barking and Dagenham as the staff members are the most
important assets; therefore the college needs to make sure they are motivated to
ensure that jobs are done efficiently. The College tries to motivate staff in order
to achieve a desired goal and directed behaviours.
One of the suggestions that I recommend that Barking and Dagenham College
needs to develop is to offer teachers more training courses to grow their ability,
skills and knowledge. This motivates teachers since it allows them to see how
the college is taking care of them and helping them to achieve the best. It also
means they have more responsibilities to take in consideration. The advantages
of providing more training courses are that it enables them to explore new ways
of teaching. I also believe that trained teachers are more motivated because
they have an increased level of teaching and knowledge, which helps them to
participate to the entire reputation of the college. This is beneficial to college in a
long term since they can provide better services to their students, therefore
better results.
Moreover the college can pay for MBA and support the teachers in completing
their master degree. This enables the knowledge of the subject therefore
benefitting the teachers by providing quality lessons for the students hence more
responsibilities to be taken to plan effectively for the forthcoming lessons.
Beside this, the college training and up skilling helps teacher to be promoted
since they are inputting wider range of skills into their teaching skills. This means
they are able to deliver a successful lesson to the students therefore the college
will reward them since they are helping to raise the overall college reputation.
Herzberg has influenced my decisions because he believes that employees are
motivated when they have more responsibilities, challenges and promoted. I
believe that teachers are motivated by increasing their skills and job satisfaction
through training, development and recognition. Herzberg believes that hygiene
factors are what is needed to prevent job dissatisfaction but doesn’t motivate an
employee. These hygiene factors are supervision, status, and money and job
security. In addition to this teachers are more motivated when they are trained
because the more the staffs get better at what they’re doing, it can lead them to
a good promotion which encourages them to produce a better piece of work. This
idea would benefit the college in getting quality teachers since the training
courses will help them to widen their knowledge and improve their skills. If
employees gain more skills it will enable them to be motivated as they can get
promotions for their hard work. This would also benefit the students in getting
the higher grades; hence increase the pass rate which means parents will be
encouraged to send their students to Barking and Dagenham. This benefits the
college in the long run because the retention level of the students will increase.
Another suggestion that I recommend Barking and Dagenham is to increase the
PSP amount and the length of the period. Professional Standard Payment is given
to teachers once they have fulfilled a set of criteria given. Barking and
Dagenham has applied PSP to the college staffs to motivate them to work
efficiently to a set of task and then reward them for their achievement. I believe

, that by increasing the amount of PSP will motivate staff to work to the best of
their ability so they can produce good outcomes to both students and to the
college. Moreover I suggest that the PSP scheme should be provided in a longer
period such as having 6 standards rather than having three. This would
encourage staff to work hard and to deliver an effective lesson since they will be
paid more. This is beneficial to the staff because they will be able to apply for the
PSP once and receive more money. According to Taylor’s motivation theory
employees are motivated and purely work for money and incentives. The
advantage of this to Barking and Dagenham is that; they’ll be able to get a
better outcome and increase students pass rate. Another benefit of this method
to the staffs is that it encourages them to get high retention and this makes the
college income grow. This also means teachers have to work hard to meet all the
standards. This benefits the college because it gives them an outstanding
reputation which increases students that attend the following year. One of the
disadvantages of these factors is that it gives the teachers a little opportunity to
be creative in what they are doing. Taylor’s theory has influenced my decisions
because I believe that employees are motivated when productivity increase and
staff only perform well when given the direct reward of monetary payment.
The last suggestion that I could like to make is that Barking and Dagenham
College should aim to provide free meals for teachers. This means all the staffs
are able to get together whist having their lunch. This enables them to create a
better relationships and atmosphere. This also motivates teachers at Barking and
Dagenham since they are able to discuss and share ideas on specific subject and
topics. I believe that creating a good relationship will help the teachers to work
together and plan effectively for lessons. This motivates them to provide a better
teaching lesson since they can help each other. For e.g. an IT teacher can help a
business teacher with the technologies and this enables them to create a better
and quality presentation to the students. This means the teaching skills will
improve therefore benefiting the students learning. This benefit the college in
the long run because staff members at Barking and Dagenham will be pleased
with the support and the needs they are being offered. Therefore they will be
motivated to produce a best outcome hence benefiting the students in getting
the higher grade. This is beneficial to the college because they will get a high
retention in the following year so the college will get more money from the
government. In addition to this it gives employees an opportunity to develop
better understanding that lifts up the performance of the college. Moreover
working together with other teachers will motivate them because they will able
to share lesson plans hence reduce the work load and the stress level. This is
beneficial to the college because employees will able to meet the targets set up
and helps improve the students to widen their knowledge.
Maslow theory has also influenced my decisions since employees are motivated
when they all have the basic needs met, such as food, safety and better
relationships in the workplace. I believe that if the college provides them all
these needs then they will be motivated in what they are doing. As a result the
teachers will work hard to raise the college reputation hence benefiting the
college in a long run.
In conclusion I believe that my overall suggestions would improve motivation
amongst the employees at Barking and Dagenham. The three suggestions that I
