Introduction

In this assignment, I will be explaining how employee performance can be
measured and managed. The organisation that I have chosen to discuss
about for the purpose of this task is Asda.

Asda

Asda Stores Ltd. is a British supermarket chain which retails food, clothing,
general merchandise, toys and financial services. It also has a mobile
telephone network, (via the Vodafone Network), Asda Mobile. Its head
office is at Asda House in Leeds, West Yorkshire. Asda became a subsidiary
of the American retail giant Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer. in 1999
and is the Uk`s second largest chain by market share after Tesco. In
December 2010, Asda`s share of the UK grocery market stood at 16.5%.
Asda is a global business found in many countries such as the UK, USA,
Canada, and Australia etc. Asda now not only sells groceries but since
1990, Asda had its own range of clothing known George.

Measuring and managing employee performance

Measuring employee performance

Organisations like Asda can find out how hard employees are working if
they measure their performance. Performance measurement is an on-
going activity for all managers and their subordinates. Employee
performance can be measured in many ways.

There are two types of performance indicators, qualitative and
quantitative; - qualitative performance indicators are indicators that are
written such as feedback reports.e.g customer reviews. However,
quantitative performance indicators are indicators that are written in
numbers, these consist of graphs, spread sheets and pie charts. An
example of quantitative is that you can give points for different categories
for price/ time.

Sales targets

Asda is a supermarket chain which retails its main products, groceries. So
its main objective is to make as much profit as possible by selling their
products. Asda will want to employ staffs that are hardworking and willing
to contribute to the profit making of the business. Asda will want to
employ staff that can work in a certain speed in a given time and as for a
cashier, they will want someone that can sell as much products as
possible in a given time by receiving payment for their products. The

, number of products sold is a good objective indicator of performance. The
more customers seen by a cashier, and the more products sold, the higher
the quantity.

Growth targets -

The quality of work performed can be measured the percentage of work
output that must be redone or is rejected is one such indicator. As for the
manufacture and producer of groceries, merchandise and other products,
the quality of the products meaning how good the product is will be
measure. The quality of the products is really important to be considered
as it can affect the profit making of the business and so can contribute to
the success of the business.

Financial target –

Here are some of Asda's financial objectives for the year 2015
Increase sales by 700 000 shoppers per week (to 14m) in 2015
Achieve no. 2 A market share in UK grocery market
Achieve market share of 20% BY 2015
Expand number of stores by 20 per year.

Waiting times –

From research, waiting times in Asda are not so well. One of the
customers complaint and have said they have waited 3 hours for a call
back Also it has been mentioned refund takes up to more than three days.
Asda’s pharmacy department have also not been in a good position.

‘It doesn't take more than 5 minutes in store to find someone who dislikes the
pharmacy. Waiting times are long, the pharmacist hides behind a screen and you
never see him/her much less talk to them. You have to queue to hand in your
prescription, when you could just place it in a box… ‘

The reordering system is pure chaos, with some meds arriving early, some late
and people being too asked to return to the store on numerous occasions. If you
ask anyone about the chemist they have a gripe.
