Introduction – In this task, I am going to suggest, with justification, 5
ways of improving motivation in an organisational setting for McDonalds.

Dear CEO of McDonalds, I have suggestions to improve how you can
motivate the employees.

Staff Discounts – By introducing and having staff discounts at
McDonalds, employees for example can buy foods at McDonalds for a
lower price. Giving discounts will get staff’s attention to McDonalds and
helps the business. This is because giving discount to staff will help
increase sales as staff would want to buy McDonalds delicious, tasty foods
for break and lunch or even buy the foods for their own family for a good
price. Another reason is that it will increase reputation of McDonalds. This
is because if McDonalds is giving discount to staff, it will help staffs who
are having financial problems from an insufficiency of income this is
meeting Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (physical). This will show that
McDonalds is trying to make an effort to help staff in tough times. Also it
will help McDonalds meet the businesses goals and targets because
discounts can increase motivation levels of staff so therefore will increase
McDonald’s sales figures. Moreover, it will help build stronger relationships
as McDonalds is benefiting staff so this means staff will be engaged in
their work, happy, won’t complain, take advantage of the discounts and
will enjoy a treat at McDonalds. This is an example of Taylor’s theory as it
offers money incentives.

The problems and issues that may rise when introducing staff discounts is
that it may cut down profit margins. This means McDonalds is selling their
products/service at a lower price than the normal price. Furthermore
when you are giving discounts to staff, staff may ask McDonalds to give
discount all the time. If McDonalds refuses, then they might lose staff,
staff loyalty will be no more and the motivation levels of staff will go
down.

From research, I have found out that one of your rivals KFC offer this new
flexible benefits scheme. Giving the employees a choice to choose the
benefits that suit them from different categories.

In response, we’ve introduced a flexible benefits scheme called Pick & Mix for salaried
employees including restaurant and assistant restaurant managers – around 11% of our
employees. This offers a selection of options, so employees can choose the benefits that
suit them from categories including Finance and Protection, Health and Wellbeing, and
Leisure and Lifestyle. The new package also includes a new discounted shopping
website.

, Flexible Working – By introducing and having flexible working at
McDonalds, staff can perform well and have a certain time to work such as
10am to 4pm so they have time to work according to their schedule and
have a good home life with their families. Flexible working has many
advantages to McDonalds. It can attract staffs with greater levels of skills
which creates a diverse workforce so the cost of recruiting staff will be
less. Also, flexible working can attract students where they can work
evenings or weekends or during holidays. This means you can manage the
workforce effectively and more profitably. Some workers might prefer
early or late shift so there will be more job satisfaction as staff will have
better self-esteem, confidence and optimism so it will create a nice
atmosphere at McDonalds. Staff will be happy to work as they are working
at a time which they can manage therefore creates a positive work life
and home life balance. Also it will increase customer loyalty and
satisfaction as staffs are motivated to do the jobs according to their time
without no hesitation or problems. Another reason is that flexible working
reduces the level of sickness/absence who have a better work and home
life will more likely to have a good health. Flexible working gives
employees to have a chance of greater freedom and gives them time to
do other important things in their life which helps them make use of their
time. McDonald’s need to implement Mayos theory of basic needs
because some of the employees might need to take out flexible hours and
they might be studying at university so they might not have the time.

The problems and issues that may arise when introducing flexible working
is that if McDonalds is open longer according to different times that suits
employees then costs for lighting and heating could increase. Another
reason is that if employees at not in McDonalds at certain times, it may
not be suitable for the business as it may need more employees where
constant work needs to be done. They may need more part – time workers
to cover all the shifts as McDonalds open 24 hours.

Bonuses – By introducing and having bonuses at McDonalds, this means
that the business is rewarding employees for their hard work. Giving
employees bonuses is a very effective way to get employees motivated to
strive to their very best and increase motivation levels so they can meet
McDonald’s sales targets and the aims and objectives of the business.
Bonuses are a way of rewarding employees for the hard work of staff and
a way of appreciation to staff from McDonalds. This means that this will
make employees feel valued, happy and get something for their hard work
and loyalty so this will make employees to continue being motivated and
